Yup I use the AR108 as well, nice and cheap, and very durable! I have left it in the garden overnight in the rain several times (accidently of course) and it still works!

I have a AR108 too brought from Maplins after I wore my other one out. Its very small and something you can stick in your pocket. It scans 100 chanells, the batterys last ages and its easy to use.Its great for listerning at airports but no so good for signals far away. It would be ideal as a first scanner.

Have have a PSR-282 its simple to use, has 200 memory channels, i use 30 in the NCL area. Its reasonably cheap, and has keypad to punch frequencies in.
It goes to 4 decimal places and scans 20 channels per second. A breif description there.

I have an IC-A3E. It’s quite an expensive bit of kit (about £300-350) but worth it if you’re serious about it. I can usually pick up LTN and LCY transmissions, both are situated about 30 miles from here. And of course for STN things, it’s perfect 😀 I also get London Control to listen to all the LHR outbounds going over my house, and get to pick up all the Cathay’s, JAL’s and SAS’s etc.

I have an Icom IC-R5, which is fine for, compact(without the ariel on! 😉 ) and not too expensive.
Nice choice (i have the same one) 😀

I think what you are reffering to is called a “Scanner”. To be honest you cant go too wrong. I would recommend spending between £100 and £180, depending on how serious you are. You want a Receiver, not a Transceiver (which enables you to talk back and I believe you need a licence for these). Check out any reputable websites (Transair for example).
