I took this photo at Chino in 2001, in the MARC/Tallichet compound. For many years I thought it was from a Bolingbroke, however comparing it with cutaway drawings and photos from the same angle, it seems I was wrong. For a start, where the outer wings attach to the centre wing section on Blenheims and Bolingbrokes is under the cowling, which needs to be removed first. This is more like a Beaufighter (but the cowling is different). The firewall is much closer to the wing leading edge as well. Any ideas? Another thought was a Lockheed twin, but that doesn’t fit either. Its not from a Bristol Beaufort, even though there were several Beaufort bits present. The red paint may be a clue. Most of the compound has been cleared now, with many bits going to Pima or Nashville, however I suspect this bit is still present.
cheers,
Andy A.

at first I was like “Man, what a Beech!” 😀

Many thanks guys, I think that confirms it. In fact, there was a DC-3 fuselage in the compound, I don’t know why I didn’t link them at the time! There were so many sections of aircraft around that it was only when I got the slides developed I could identify them. The reg of the DC-3 was N213MA.

This is an interesting angle of this aeroplane.

100% Dak.
Here is a shot I took of a Dak in Darwin post Cyclone Tracey.
Note the firewall detail comparison not shown in PL’s photo.

For comparison, here is a photo from the Basler DC-3 conversion facility.

If it looks like a dak, Quaks like a dak and flies like a dak then there is only one answer……………..it’s a Dak

Hi–
I agree…this looks like a Dak. Peering at photos of pulled-apart DC-3s convinces me this centre section can’t be anything but…

I’d have to say C-47/DC-3. Besides the general shape and arrangement the right landing gear is indicative.
