I know this photo isn’t very good but does anyone recognize this to be an actual yoke from an airplane? If so, what is it? and would it be possible to find one to buy or at least to take measurements from to replicate? :

I’m actually replicating a movie prop from the 70’s and this is what they used for the steering wheel. This is also the only photo I have of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. There are other parts, besides this that I may need help identifying but we’ll start with this one.
Thanks

Sorry to drag this corpse out of the ground but have a couple of scifi control column top pics that need identifying..

Nice.
Thanks for the heads up! 🙂

Cut down and bent?
Though that last picture you posted looks like a horizontal tube has been cut off the hub.

Thanks for the suggestions.
From a replica movie prop builders perspective, often times it is tough to tell what they might have used. Where the original Star Wars movie is concerned, we know that they bought a TON of junk from scrap yards in London for the original sets and props. They purchased loads of airplanes and airplane parts, WWII weapons, clothing, etc. so it’s sort of a natural assumption for replica prop builders to start looking at those types of things.
I figured I would probably have to scratch build the yoke but I thought what the heck, if something could be found, even if it wasn’t exactly “right” it might be a good alternative… like the AN2 yoke for example:

Obviously it’s not exactly the same. I don’t even know how tough something like this is to find or how expensive it would be but if it was something that “could” work I might go that route. Again, I’m assuming I will have to scratch build it.
thanks again though for the brainstorming! 🙂

The more I look the more I see fairground ride, no way are they aviation related.

Nope, they come out horizontal from the hub

Close to the Triang Go-Kart of the 70s – it was the rubber grips that triggered this memory from the depths.

Here is a thought, as with yours they would need to steer it about, so you are going to have some form of steering wheel hub fitted, what if they simply bought a pair of steel Racing bike handlebars then cut and welded those to the hub, the push bike type rubber grips you see on it would fit that. it would be a heck of a lot easier than trying to get an aircraft yoke to fit a sterering column, when you already have a wheel mount.
as an example of what I mean.

and then when you think about it, those rubber finger shaped grips would then be in the right position for a set if racing bike grips pre cut off

a set of cut off moustache bars would be close

It’s almost like the p-38 one

I don’t think that was its original shape, if you blow the last image up, you can see the tube pinches where it has been rebent? possibly it was originally wider and has been reshaped to fit the cockpit or allow the actors to fit in.
I cannot see a Aircraft manufacturer making it that way.

It certainly doesn’t look particularly aviation related

Here is a better shot of the yoke:

Any ideas?

What the heck, I may as well bump this thread too 🙂
In case someone has any more ideas on the yoke.
thanks

Great ideas guys. Thanks!
And thanks for the compliments on the project.
Thanks for the lead on the AN2! That one is close. The P38 is fairly close too and I like the look of it.
I wonder what the dimensions are and how difficult either of those is to find and how expensive… if I can’t find anything else. I may end up scratch building it.

The other close to the shape is a p38 one with two bars cut off, it even looks like you can see where one has gone.

General aviation 50/60’s. My guess is that it’s either inverted or has half the handhold circle cut off

It almost looks like an AN 2 one, trouble is Cold War was still on the go, mind you if it was filmed or sourced in Africa

Probably completely wrong but that wheel / yoke does remind me of those found on amusement arcade games and playground rides.
Great project and photos by the way.
