I’ve done something very silly technically,is there anybody who can give me any advice please ?
Briefly,I’ve got a new netbook.Set it up yesterday with just one problem,it wouldn’t connect to the internet. It could see the 02 broadband, but I kept getting the message that there was a connectivity problem between the netbook and the broadband.
This is the tricky part.Mr.Bee was home, and we were comparing the settings on the netbook and his laptop,to see what was different.I was looking at the internet connection area in the control panel, when I must accidentally have clicked on something I shouldn’t,but I can’t remember what – DUH !!!
Oh calamity ! The screen went black and now I can’t get anything at all.I switch on,the green power light comes on,and that’s all.
Also, although the battery was fully charged when it happened, when I switch on now connected to the mains, the battery charging symbol lights up,even though it should still be full.
I’m black and blue from kicking myself,so if anyone has any ideas,I’d be so grateful.
Mr.Bee has given me the full lecture about fiddling with things you don’t understand.I don’t know why, because it never stops him.

I’m an old dear,I only need it for e-mailing and making witty remarks on forums :diablo:
My daughter still wants me to twitter, though she said the collossal number of tweets about The Wedding Dress made her ashamed to be female.
I thought a mobo was a popular beat music award.

Was about to say, sounds more like a mobo failure – People have suggested that you may have changed the source for the display/turned it off – This shouldnt be a problem if you have turned the computer off and on again as source reverts to default and as had been mentioned you would have seen bios if this was the case 🙂
I wish you’d asked about android tablets before buying one 🙁 lol You’ve bought one old an outdated already, you can buy them with 2.2 now for the same price pretty much!
Only android tablet worth buying imo is the Motorola Xoom 🙂

Thank you all for your suggestions, I really did try every one.
No joy though,so a trip to the local computer repairers revealed the cause – a catastrophic failure of the motherboard, more expensive to repair than what the netbook’s worth.
The sellers have agreed to a full refund, but this left me without my internet dummy for my forthcoming holiday, and I need some relaxation if I’m going to be banged up with Mr. Bee twenty-four hours a day for three weeks.
I’ve just bought myself a 7 inch Android 2.1 tablet.
Does anyone have any tips for things I need to know, problems I might encounter ? It’s up and running at home but I haven’t tried it anywhere else yet.
It’s small enough to go in my handbag, but presumably it has to go through a special security scanner in airports ? I don’t want another technical disaster.

BB this is what my partner does (purely on mains with no battery fitted), turn the machine on so that the green light etc is on, and after 10 or so mins turn the power off to it at the mains.
Leave off for a while (say 20-30 mins) and turn back on, eventually after 20 mins or so the screen come on. The computor is completely unaffected, ie no loss of saved data etc.
However I can’t really say to you that you must try that as I can’t be responsible for you ‘putor, and it might be a different problem, but it does work with ours. Don’t smack it!
My first port of call would be to take it back to where it was from, after all refurbished computors can go wrong and it might be a genuine problem that you have encountered.
At the very least the staff should be helpful to you.

Yes,it looks as though I’ll have to do that.
Thanks for the suggestions,everyone.

Keith, if the graphics drivers were somehow uninstalled, there would still be the BIOS info on startup that is run from the ROM. I think you would even see the Windows splash screen (Windows logo and loading bar) but then nothing else would show.
Correct.
The Acer Aspire One netbooks don’t have a graphics card as such. They use a chipset on the motherboard instead.
Edit: Thinking about it in the shower (as you do), I recall that I’ve heard of this problem before and that the “cure” was a BIOS upgrade – not something to be tackled by the non-techie as you can easily turn your computer into a paperweight if you get it wrong.
If the netbook is still under warranty – as it sounds like it should be – take it back to where you bought it from.

BumbleBee. Could there be any chance you have “uninstalled” the graphics card ? sounds crazy ! but I managed to do this by accident once ? following this “inadvertant click on the wrong place” my computer seemed to work OK but with nothing on the display ! which tends to make it impossible to move on from this position ……….. but the bloke at PC world managed to sort it somehow
Smack on the bum seems in order 😮

Yes,it’s an Acer Aspire – new to me,but refurbished.
I’ll plod on with all suggestions, and may even resort to giving it a thump, which always did the trick when televisions had valves.
This’ll teach me not to try and save money.

Briefly,I’ve got a new netbook.
Is it an Acer Aspire Netbook?
My partners does this every now and then, but at the moment I can’t remember the remedy and I don’t want to give bad advice.
The battery gave up the ghost a long time back so now it is only used with the mains lead and without the battery fitted.
Two months back my Mrs trod on the screen, it was still displaying but with crazed patterns across it, I brought a new screen for £35 and fitted it.
So whatever you do don’t just throw it away!
Edit, sorry just noticed you’ve said it’s new, if you have any issues take it straight back to the store and they should be able to help you with it.

Fn + F8 usually displays whats on the screen to a remote screen.
By: DazDaMan - 23rd February 2011 at 18:38
Mine did that – only a few weeks old, too. Off to Dell it went because nobody else is allowed to fix their stuff!

One of the top row of buttons on the keyboard should have an icon on it that looks like a TV screen (or possibly like a laptop, or both).
Try pressing that key and the ‘Fn’ key at the same time. You may need to do it a couple of times. If that doesn’t work, try replacing the ‘Fn’ with the ‘Alt’ key.
If it still doesn’t work, then there may be something pretty fundamental wrong with the netbook.

‘Afternoon Bumblebee,
I’m far from being a computer expert but if the screen is totally dead when you turn the power button on then there probably isn’t much you can really do. You should always expect to see at least something when you turn it on from ‘cold’, and if you don’t then I suspect something fairly major has gone wrong that isn’t connected to anything you’ve done with the internet settings. If it’s new then maybe take it back and explaining the problem may be the best course of action.
I notice Lance is viewing the thread and he knows infinitely more about computers than me, so maybe he knows a trick I don’t!

Hi Anne, I purchased a new netbook last year, and even though it was brand new but after two days, it went just as yours has, the battery was for want of a better word..knackered!! The other thing was that I had not entered the code for the modem..
