[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-11-02 AT 03:47 PM (GMT)]Why not try two mirrors , on opposite walls of cupboard, so mousey looks up sees an infinate number of mice in the mirror, looks round , sees another infinate number of mice, thinks they’re after his scrummy nibbles that have been strategically placed by one of the mirrors, so he gets a tad angry and prepares to see the other “mice” off, when he sees the infinate number of mice in front of him and the infinate number of mice behind do the same it scares the sh*t out of him and dies of heart attack, pick mousey up by tail , dispose of in dustbin, job done

C’mon guys…some very elaborate traps there but you are all missing the simplest one out….a mirror !

Place the mirror flat on the surface of the cupboard and put some mouse nibbles of some such on it…and wait.

Along comes mousey see’s the food and thinks ‘I’ll have some of that !’ and walks onto the mirror to get the food. Mousey looks down and sees the reflection of the ceiling and thinks he / she’s upside down on the ceiling…looks up and sees the real ceiling, gets confused seeing two ceilings, falls off and breaks his / her neck. All ya gotta do then is pick up said dead mouse and relocate to nearest bin (or wrap it up in a plastic bag and bury it in the garden.)

We are talking about meeces (plural of mouse ?) and not the sort with long tail that makes the cursor move on the PC screen, aren’t we ?

Ps, this trap also works on flies but you have to stick the mirror to the ceiling for it to work. Same principle of operation but the fly see’s two floor’s.

I know…I know, I’m sad !. I’ll go back to my C*rlsb*rg

Bait the trap with peanut butter, then wrap sewing thread loosely over the peanut butter. When the mouse tugs at the thread to get to the peanut butter, the trap springs.

Buy one of these humane mouse traps. How many people will happily scoop up the remains of a mouse?

I would rather do it nicely… Buy one of these from your local junk shop. (See attached – image made by myself of course).

The cats have been on a diet for about a week now and they still can’t be bothered! I thought about poison but gave up on it because of the reasons you have already mentioned. I will try to seal the gaps but I’ve got a feeling they are more crafty than that. I’m just about to head on up to the DIY store to see if I can get a more humane trapping system so I can then take them abroad and realease the little buggers there. We have got a humane squirrel trap (as they were traumatising the local kids) and so far I’ve caught and relocated 7 squirrels using a brazil nut as bate.

What’s the best bate for a mouse?

Drastic, but effective. Are you by any chance a graduate of the USA’s clandestine Mouse Catching and Elimination Group? If so, how’s the work going on stealth mice?

As a member of the National Society for the protection of Mice, I cannot condone the use of violence against these poor defenceless creatures who, after all, are only looking for somewhere to live, something to eat and a nice warm house to wreck…

Seriously, beware of the use of poisons, especially if you have cats. Poisons are effective but most of the time the mouse will crawl back to a hidey hole to die which leads to another problem, while decomposing they stink! You would have to watch that a cat doesn’t get hold of a dying mouse or a corpse else you will be in for a substantial vets bill. I like the idea of humane traps but that leaves the problem of where to release the little beggars.

There are apparently devices available which emit sound which deters mice from settling in your property. You often see these advertised in the Sunday papers. I’ve never used one but a friend reckons they are very effective. I think they cost between £30 and £40.

Do you know the old Jasper Carrott story about the moles and the shotgun? A mate tried that with mice and an air rifle. His tally of kills included a butter dish, the dog’s bowl, an electric kettle and a nasty dent in the fridge door and……no mice!

I had the same problem with a mice hidden in my dish washer ( and eating the plastic pipes) and the problem has been fixed with poison.
You can find poisoned seeds which are quite efficient.

Seriously I would suggest you find the holes they are using to get into your cupboards and either trapping them there or sealing the holes up.
There are traps you can get that capture the mice rather than killing them and they will probably work better as the mouse has to climb right inside to get the bait… so if they get the bait you get them.
