Now I’m braced for what is to come but bear with me on this.
It’s August 1994 and I’m sat in a BA 747-200 over Washington state on the way to LAX.
It’s around 2AM BST and I’m looking out of the window when an aircraft flies on a close parallel track in the opposite direction.
I pinch myself several times and try to match up what I saw (I was in the Air Cadet Squadron aircraft recognition team).
The aircraft was matt black and immediately made me think of an F102.

However, what I have just seen had a much longer tail fin extending almost the length of the fuselage.
Recently, I caught a documentary on youtube which mentioned the Convair Xf92.

Its not perfect but its been the best part of 20 years, and I would say the xf92 is about 80% the right shape.
If you chopped the front fuselage off of an F102 and married it to the wing and tail of the XF92 and painted it black its pretty much the aircraft I saw, flying very close to us.
There is no logic to either suggestion, I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts (other than “why wasn’t I asleep?”)
