Anybody have any references to the markings and serials carried by the Yorks of 51 Squadron?

Hello Moggy.
By my reckoning 51 Sqdn. managed to get through 62 Yorks during their rather short time with them. That’s quite a list.
Still you did put all those lovely 388th colour pictures on the forum.
I feel a private message coming on.

From Alan Lake’s book :
51 Sqd, York C.1, MW287 – TB-Z
51 Sqd , York C.1, MW331 – MH-H
The 1st, above, is listed when the sqd’s code was TB between May 1945 and Dec 1949.
The 2nd is listed when the sqd’s code was MH between Dec 1949 and Oct 1950.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your efforts guys.
I was rather hoping for a page full of serial and squadron codes listed in nice straight columns 🙁

Liked the pic though. I have one somewhere of the ramp at Heathrow with a York sitting there. Don’t get many of those nowdays.

Moggy,
The Source Book of the RAF by Ken Delve shows the Yorks of 51 Sqn carrying two codes, MH & TB. Unfortunately, it does not give any indication of the dates when these were carried. Hope that helps.

You could try contacting the Squadron’s History Officer via the Waddington web site.
Meanwhile here’s a cleaned-up pic of a 51Sqd York refueling. (From the 51Sqd web site)
BTW, I was on 51 Sqd in its Canberra days (and Comets and a Hastings). very secretive bunch, no wonder they were called the “Secret Squirrels”. The 51 Sqd Association has reunions every year, trouble is they don’t tell you where they are held!

Moggy.
51 Squadron converted to York C.1’s in February 1946 and flew during the Berlin airlift. Throughout this period they were based at Waterbeach, Abingdon and finally Bassingbourn from where the Squadron disbanded on the 30th of October 1950.
I have one representative serial, MW250, and no reference to Squadron markings or aircraft codes.
Hope this helps.
