Help needed on airport spotting in Rome

Hello all, (happy new year)

On Feb19th 2007,me and my wife will be going to Rome for five days,it will be our first time travelling to Rome and looking forward to it. We will be travelling from LTN to Ciampino Airport about a 2 hour flight with Ryanair. I also Noted another airport close by Fiumicino. Now,i don’t know much about these two airports so i’m wondering if anyone has spotted at these airports, or does anyone know if you can go spotting at both.

If anyone can help me out on this,i be very greatful indeed.

dave:)

By the way Express1 I forgot to mention, if you and your lady visit the Colliseum and like your food I can throughly recommend the restaurant opposite – go upstairs to a kind of gallery overlooking the Colliseum (cant remember the name of the place unfortunately) I had a great scoff at reasonable prices. My eldest daughter didn’t think much of hers but then she complains about everything.

I passed through Ciampino a few months ago and as far as photography/spotting goes I thought it was a dead loss. Some interesting stuff to be seen as you land and taxi in but as mentioned earlier security is tight. My advice – don’t waste your time.

As Paul said… Ciampino is the small airport nearest to the city, it is where you will find loads of biz and CL215’s, because it is mostly biz the security is VERY tight (the high flying Italians not too keen on people photographing their business!!) You can spot/shoot,but expect to be challenged by a gun weilding cop!!,Around the perimeter is very hard to actually find the fence!! the airport is surrounded by little tight suburbs hundreds of streets….i tried going down many,to find a big wall/dead end etc… at the far end of the field past cargo there is a crash gate offering decent views BUT has a very clear warning not to stop here!! Fiumicino is the main international airport….spotting is more relaxed here but, not so many places to do it…a car is needed to get to good spots…..if you wish drop me a pm and i can give directions.

Dave,

have passed through Rome (FCO) and I have to say it was not nice. There are a lot of police around and I would advise caution when using even binos and keep the camera out of sight. Not sure of the situation on the perimeter but again anybodu using a camera will attract the wrong sort of attention.
