Hello .A friend in Croatia has sent me pictures of a spitfire wing that he dived on, and he was wondering if anybody could maybe give him any infomation on it .
Its located near a small island called Sikavac, about 10 metres underwater,
he said that there appears to be no gun port openings on the leading edge and no armament to be seen, and so far no sign of the fus ! any help would be great.
Thank You

So were the PR XI and PR XIX wings identical?
In theory could the later wings be retro-fitted to say a PRIV? Or would there be config problems? (Alierons for example)

Good job the Croatian authorities allow photography isn’t it 😉

As a Spitfire wing? Lots.
Re-painted as a Messerschmitt wing? Loads more!:eek::):D;):diablo:

I wonder how much the wing would fetch on ebay 😮 …. without a repaint 🙂

Mackerel – It’s hardly possible to have a historic aircraft forum and for provenance not to be an issue! Otherwise it would hardly be worth having a forum – you could just produce new Spitfires every week and there would be nothing historic about it!
That’s not what happens then?

You can almost smell the ‘thin but robust’ already!
Hi all, I hope you are not going to, pardon the pun, “dredge up” that old thread again. I think the question of provenance has been done to death on here !!

As far as I know, and according to John Romain, a surprising quantity of re-usables. You’d need to ask him exactly what, though.
I can vouch for the fact that the windscreen frame on P9374, as dredged out of the sand, is being used and will fly. I know, because I supplied it!
Peter Monk’s Spitfire is also flying with the tail oleo from P9374 and I know of one other well known flying Spitfire that uses the landing gear stainless steel uplocks from an unidentified but sea recovered Spitfire. So there are certainly parts that are re-usable from salt water recoveries.

Thanks guys – sorry i’m a slow typist :p

Thanks Andy, but i’m just wondering what is reused – if anything. I heard a story of a Spitfire tailwheel assembly that was dredged up from the seabed and found its way onto a flying aircraft. I’m not intending to push and embarass any owners or rebuilders, but would like to know what parts are actually used…
P9374?

Yes, it’s stunning – but that’s not an answer!
It is a salt water recovery and yes much of could be used again.
Provenance is more to do with the spirit than the poundage or square area of aluminium…in mine, but not all views.:)

P9374 might be an answer though, Elliott!
I also suspect there will be a good few parts in the image posted by Mark12 that could well be flyable.

But would anything meaningful be usable from a seawreck in a flying aircraft? Even the data plates are likely to be corroded…
Just curious

…and the seaweed.
I am sure if the fuselage was found and recovered it would be a candidate for a project restoration with provenance.
I would also be equally sure it would meet with your continued displeasure on these matters. 🙂

I would make the ORB of 683 Squadron my first port of call.
They were operating both PR Mk XI and XIX Spitfires in this region.
