Picture taken in the eighty’s, I have assumed this shot was at RAF Bentwaters, but it seems not, its possibly RAF Alconbury, but cant find any other photos featuring the Scotts pines in the background, scenery does not fit with Lakenheath or Mildenhall either so at a loss ???

Thanks to all the replies, I think we can call this solved, it is Lakenheath Airshow 1988, although I cant remember going ((I did go to a lot in those days!)
Thanks to “Archer ” for the participant list it help nail the location, I have other unidentified airframes which I have tied up with the list, A later slide in the roll (Below) shows a F16 with the Phantom which is also on the list (288)
Thanks again 😀

Having worked at Lakenheath (in Airfield Management) I am not convinced it is there although more than happy to be wrong…

My bet would be it’s from the end of Maids Cross Hill, looking east across to rw 24.

Here’s the Scramble showreport for Lakenheath in 1988: http://www.scramblemagazine.nl/?option=com_showreports&view=article&ct=GB&id=2066
It does show F-4G 69-0247 and a C-141, so if the scenery fits…

Like the others, and having been stationed there, it’s not Bentwaters (no hills like that). And like Easyrider, I’ve never heard of Woodbridge hosting an airshow…during that period it was a satellite base of Woodbridge which was the HQ of the 81st TFW, so it would not have had an airshow of its own.
Couldn’t tell you were the location is but I can assure you that Woodbridge did hold a full blown Air Display just the once back in the mid 70’s. I know cos I was there! I think it was 1976 as I remember that among the participants was Sally B which was then in her natural metal, Blue & Black scheme. Also displaying were the Poachers in their JPs, the Belgian Blue Bees helicopter team and also the Reds were also there and I have a great shot of one of their Gnats at low level with the trees creating a spectacular background. (Because the crowdline was facing North the sun was behind us for the display & created perfect conditions for photography which makes a nice change!)
Just checked on the Scramble website and found that as I suspected the Woodbridge airshow in question took place in August 1976 but the F4 in question is not listed as among the participants.

Not an expert and have only been there once for a few hours as part of my research, but I’d say that’s pretty certainly not Woodbridge.
While Woodbridge was built in the middle of a forest (great place to put an airfield intended for semi-controllable bombers!) the photo, even allowing for squashed perspective, seems to show the trees on a hillside in the background. There weren’t any such hills surrounding Woodbridge as far as I recall.

Thanks all, The consensus is RAF Lakenheath Airshow 1988 , taken from maids hill on the west side, although I cant remember going  its probably an age thing 😀 Thanks again.
Its got to be UK, I have never photographed abroad, and they are all my slides, this picture is one of a set of 4 the phantom is accompanied by a Spang F16

possibly lakenheath with a stretch of the imagination..
although the trees appear to close……. and not enough HAS’s
sort of taken from the bomb dump area looking towards the eastly HAS site
couple of Hush Houses there on google earth. vehicle parks in the area and the Starlifter possibly parked on the old cross runway.
Yes, I should be doing some work!!
Saying that it does look Germanyish to me.

Something about it screams Rammstein AB.

Most UK bases are on pretty flat terrain.
Although I’m not familiar with Upper Heyford.
No trees like that around Upper Heyford. Looks very much like Germany?
By: AlanR - 2nd July 2013 at 09:35
Not Mildenhall, Lakenheath, Bentwaters or Alconbury methinks ?
Going purely on the trees and hill they are on. Most UK bases are on pretty flat terrain.
Although I’m not familiar with Upper Heyford.
Woodbridge did have a non-flying open day, back in the 70s (?)
By: Easyrider5258 - 2nd July 2013 at 07:48
No, its not Spang, this particular phantom was common at UK airshows in the eighty,s I have other photos of it at Mildenhall, Ive never been to spang, the image is in the UK, ……. somewhere ????
By: Jayce - 2nd July 2013 at 00:59
Yup, looks like Spangdahlem before they built the new apron.
By: TonyT - 1st July 2013 at 23:49
Wouldn’t be Spangdahlem would it? As it’s a Spangdahlem Phantom.
By: Easyrider5258 - 1st July 2013 at 23:14
Should add this would have been shot at an Airshow, cant find any trace of Woodbridge hosting an airshow…
