Help please RAF tank identity

An elderly pal is clearing his garage prior to moving.

Among the items there is a fuel tank.
It is cylindrical, 29″ long and 9.5″ diameter.
He says that it was from a biplane and he things he got it in the mid-30’s.

(However, given his age, his memory isnt all it could be).

A brass plate on the end states “RAF. D G No A10087”

If anyone can identify it, or its origin, it would help him to dispose of it, a we would both be grateful.

I did contact that company and got the following reply:

We do not possess drawing A10087 online in our database.

This looks like it’s an RE8 oil tank with the filler on the other side.

Not a FE2B or D oil tank.

Also Drawing no A10088 are RE8 oil tank parts as per the parts manual.
(snipped)

So, they appear to be uncertain exactly which model it is for.

Any other suggestions or comments?

Maybe you could send photos to http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/. I’m sure they would be interested.

Thank you all for your help.

To Summarize, it is an oil tank, made by the Royal Aircraft Factory, for either an FE2D or an RE8 (or perhaps other aircraft of that era), and dates from the latter half of WW1.

I suspect that there wont be much interest in it due to the small number of such planes left now, but it is certainly interesting. (And my field is vintage electronics, particularly WW2 era.)

Thanks again.

Its a drawing that I have no detail on, but here are some drawing numbers that are around it. It gives an idea of what was on the drawing boards at the time. Could the F.E.2D be a possibility?

A10078 Details of oil tank RE7
A10080 Detail gun mount FE2B and D

A10083 Radiator support FE2D
A10084 Socket L.H. & R.H., stay R.H. & LH., shock absorber, plate FE2D

A10093 Details of block for turn button (front and rear) RE7
A10094 Details of cover, end filling piece (front and rear) RE7

It looks very much like the RE8’s 6 gallon oil tank, I have a drawing of it in my copy of the parts manual, unfortunately the actual page with the part numbers on is missing, so I can’t 100% confirm that it is the RE8’s one.

That seems to me, a sensible suggestion.

Although I know next-to-nothing about aircraft, the capacity of a tank that size is only about 7.5 gallons which doesn’t seem much to me if it were for fuel.

Heres a [picture of the plate,

Alan
It looks like a Oil tank as used on RE8’s it sits across the fuselage just in front of the pilots feet. It was probably used elsewhere though on other Farnborough designed aircraft.
See the third image down on this page http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/projects/re8-reproduction/vintage-aviator-re8

RAF Could be Royal Aircraft Factory, which would make it very old.
