Help required: PTR-175 or PTR-1751

Hi all,

As mentioned across on the Shackleton WR963 thread we’re repeatedly running up against problems with the radios on our old bomber. I’ve started this new topic to appeal for help as we have exhausted our teams knowledge of the subject and there may be forum members out there that have interest in radios but don’t read the Shack thread.

WR963 has PTR-175 and PTR-1751 fitted, but we have problems in getting them to transmit and receive. The problems have been caused by actions in the past, when kit was removed for WL790 and later for something required on a Dakota doing trials work. We have replaced much of what was removed but it is difficult to troubleshoot what we have fitted.

If anyone has any manuals they can copy for the kit mentioned – or better – could spare a couple of Saturdays to help us chase the gremlins out of our radios it would be really appreciated.

Kind regards,
Rich

It’ll have to be a CD with 1664 jpg files at around 660Mb so PM me with a postal address.

Hi Rich, a further update from the Curator who, because of the nature of the original AP that he found has gone down a slightly different route and hopefully it may provide some progress. Here’s his latest reply:

“I have looked through our APs for aircraft that were fitted with this equipment. The only one that is near enough is the Buccaneer. I have copied out the section on the radio fit which includes the inter-unit wiring.”

Unfortunately I’m not over at NAM until Monday, but as soon as I get the copies I’ll post them off to you – please reconfirm your postal address by PM.

Rich, I’ve sent over your latest request and I’ll try and talk with the Curator in the morning – if we can narrow down the topic to a specific section of the AP I’m sure that we can get it scanned up for you!

Hi chaps,

Thanks for the responses and work on our behalf.

TerryP – those manuals would be extremely useful, if I could have copies that would be excellent. I’ve Pm’d you my e-mail.

Howard – is there any chance we could have a copy of the part of the AP that details the checks? We think the problem may be in one of the interconnecting boxes.. the cabling all checks out, but for some reason there’s no speech getting through when you press ‘transmit.’

Kind regards,

Rich

Rich, the AP that NAM has in its Archive details check routines for various control boxes but this seems to be for an ‘off-aircraft’ type text-rig of some kind – might this be of use?

The Curator has a great deal of ‘comms’ experience and he wonders whether you have more of a cabling / connection problem.

Rich, I have just received the following response, which sounds hopeful:

“I did not see your email until late this afternoon, checked on our AP database and it would seem that we do have some information; I will check this out on Monday. Our Shack. was not fitted with this (later) equipment so there is little help in our Shack. APs.”

More news when I have a further update! 🙂

Rich,

I’ve emailed over the enquiry to NAM and hopefully I should be able to let you have any feedback (apologies for the pun) later this afternoon. 🙂

Hi Howard,

Thanks for both links. It looks like one of our team working along similar lines, as its top of our priority list at the moment.

Regards,

Rich

Rich,

Is your request related to this thread on ‘Modern Military’? http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?127316-Shackleton-AEW&p=2083663#post2083663

The same response applies – the NAM Curator may be able to assist and he’s also a ‘good radio-knowledge man’! 🙂
