I have had a box of V1 flying bomb parts since the year dot, and everytime someone looks at them they ask what these items are!
My guess has always been that they are the engine inlet valves, they are 1.6mm steel and typically 150mm long.
Time to consult the experts I think!
Any ideas?

They are definitely the dive spoilers from under the tailplane…I finally found a photo tonight that confirms it.
Interestingly two different sizes were used on each V1 with the larger one under the port tailplane and the smaller one under the starboard tailplane (hinges to the rear with the squarer side inboard).
When the air-log propeller on the nose of the V1 had measured the required range an electrical contact was made that fired two detonators that locked the elevators in the neutral position, severed the compressed air supply to the rudder servo and allowed the two spoilers to drop below the tailplane to initiate the terminal dive.
That is quite a collection you have there…from at least four different V1 flying-bombs!
Thanks for all that, I agree, definitely spoilers.
They are indeed painted in the camoflage scheme of the aircraft.
I have a box with all kinds of other goodies from these V1s. What makes them quite nice is that they were picked up at the time and are labelled where they crashed, with little or no corrosion.
The late Dave Brett gave the box to me a long time ago, I don`t know where it originates from before he had it.
I must get it all into a display case and in the local air museum (Solway).
Finally, the youtube clip is really something. I have been told how loud those small pulse jets are so this one must be something else!
I assume he built it from scratch.
Thanks again

Peter
When I get a minute i’ll go along to IWM Lambeth for you and get some pics. In the meantime, maybe you could post the pics on WIX or one of the axis forums – might have more luck there.
Cheers

This is the only drawing I can find showing the spoilers – marked (a):

The more I think about this, the more I’m convinced these are in fact spoilers (from at least four V1s)…they are hinged, are about the right shape and size…and in your photo they seem to be painted ‘exterior’ colours (blue / green).
I remember looking at the spoilers on the V1 at the IWM Lambeth and do seem to remember that they also had the stiffening corrugations in them.

I have to say my first thought was they could be the little spoilers that flipped out under the elevators to initiate the final dive…but there are only two of those on a V1 and you seem to have a lot more (and several different shapes and sizes).
I can see why you thought they could be engine valves but…
…I can’t see them on this drawing of the Argus-Duct valve-assembly.

If you are looking for your next ground-running project…how about one of these? 😀

Thanks.
At one time I used to think they were trim tabs, but I have ruled that out.
There are no cooling gills on a V1, I am sure of that.
I would have thought there were loads of V1 experts on here, I am quite surprised!

their uniform size, shape and that they appear to overlap each other leads me to suggest some sort of shroud or shield possibly a heat shield of some sort or cooling gills.
