Help To Identify An RAF Officer In Painting

Hi all,
A bit of a long shot but i wonder if any of you can put a name to this RAF officer.
This is the only image i have and i have no further leads to offer.
Many thanks in advance

Hi Don and Matt,
Thanks for your replies.
I’m fairly sure that this is our chap.
I will attempt to contact Sandy Barrs daughter and request a better picture.
Cheers

Taking things a step further through Google:

http://www.644squadron.org/resources/crewops/s_z/scott_h.htm

The attached photo was copied from this page.

The website honors Canadian Sandy Barr, not just 644 Squadron. On the contacts page you’ll find his daughter’s e-mail address. Who knows, maybe she has further records, or can shed some light on when the group photo with Hugh Scott was taken. The direct link to the contacts page:

Dear all,
Many thanks for your contributions on my behalf.
I have been informed (via a restorer that worked on the painting) that the subject is Squadron Leader Hugh Scott.
I don’t know anything about him as a google search doesn’t provide much.
If anyone has any info on him or the units that he served with i would appreciate it.
Thanks once again
Gerry

Good point Tony T, although as you say I’m not sure about shoulder boards. I know that Pete Brothers A.Cdr tunic at Tangmere doesn’t have them, and neither does this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cold-War-Era-RAF-Air-Commodore-Pilot-s-No-1-Dress-Uniform-Ref-LUS-/141061096327

Would it be whether they are No 1, Dress…or whatever?

Its just that on the painting it looks as if it might represent a single (light) broad band on its dark ground?

Tangmere, would say a Sqn Ldr? Cannot see him being air rank as he wears no shoulder boards on his uniform, though not sure when they came in, looks similar to

Gerry

Like Tony, I am trying to work out his rank.

Is that a single thick ring – thus denoting Air Commodore? Seem unlikely to be two rings of a Flt Lt. Can’t make it out. But Air Cdre might fit neatly if this chap is, say, serving on Diplomatic Staff at Oslo.

Cheers gents,
I am pretty sure that they are raf wings but will look into the likelihood of the pilot being Polish.
Andy, that’s a good idea. I will see what google throws up for Air attaches.
Cheers gents

Is it worth checking who the Air Attache (or his staff) might have been in Oslo during 1946? Just a thought.

Dear all,
I had promised to post a better photograph.
Below is attached a slightly better one which may assist with identification.
I am sure that those are pilots wings and not an observers brevet.
The painting is signed ‘Parker. Oslo 1946.’
Hopefully someone may recognise the subject.
Cheers

Could the wings be a Polish Eagle?
It doesn’t look right for an Observer or Pilots wings.

So, are we looking at someone who flew in Europe with Bomber Command and then in the Far East on Liberators or Halifaxes maybe? An Observer who was a Wing Commander?

Looks like an Observers badge to me also, it’s rather odd shape being a pilots wing, especially as so much detail is in the ribbons.

Tony, the 1939 – 45 Star was issued after 1943, and i think originally known as the 39-43 star ?

I dont think its Peter Townsend. I thought Observer too. The bottom ribbon looks like an OBE to me. It must have been after the war as there is a 39-45 Star. Chances are he was a WgCdr (or the middle stripe is just painted too thick).

Thanks all,
I can see a likeness to Alec Cranswick but I don’t think the DSO is on this chaps medal ribbon. Perhaps the portrait was completed before its award.
I think the ribbons are as follows: DFC , 39/45 star, air crew europe and burma star. I can’t make out the bottom ribbon.
i will attempt to get a clearer picture.
Thanks all once again

It looks a bit like A G A Fisher. But no rosette? And I haven’t checked his decorations yet.

Is that an Observers flying badge he’s wearing?

Morning trolly aux,
I wondered about that but i’m not convinced.
Although the photo is poor quality i can’t see the rosette on his 39/45 star. That said the picture may have been painted before the end of the war and the distribution of the rosette.
Gerry.
