The date for the two images of G-DAKS/’G-AGHY’ is Sunday 27th June 1982 – and the hangar shapes confirm absolutely for certain the location  is Liverpool and I can add that the occasion is an Air Display at Speke.

G-DAKS arrived at Liverpool Airport at 1124 on the Sunday morning from Woodford (where it had appeared in the RAFA Air display there the day before).  It departed Liverpool at 1500, performed a display routine and departed directly after for Duxford.  In 1982 Liverpool Airport was still active on the original ‘north’ airfield and the late 1930s Art Deco terminal was still in use.  In the images the aircraft is flying along the axis of runway 26, which although closed for landings and departures in April ’82 was re-activated for the day of the airshow.

The only other record I have for this aircraft in the 1980s being in Liverpool airspace is on Wednesday 30th September 1981 when it performed a go-around (at the time an overshoot) on runway 17 while en route through the air traffic zone and likely ATC requested a look at her, to which the crew obliged!

As I find I can ‘edit’, I’ll two images I have of ‘G.AGHY’ at the Liverpool Air Show in June 1982 tomorrow – it is a bit late now to go digging through the photofiles.

I seem to remember that a Dakota in German markings appeared in ‘The Dirty Dozen’.

I have also noticed for a while now N147DC carries a aerial on its roof the black aerial is this so it can carry USAF markings and be used for for roles in films acting as a C-47 ??

I can’t imagine any film requiring any aircraft to be that precise.
Even the “great” aviation films are not correct to that level of detail.

Loads more I don’t have pictures of. She’s quite a machine, totally original she still even has the glider towing gear. Rumour has it that she’s the lowest time C47 / DC3 in the world. Mike opens her up for visitors at most of the airshows she attends and is well worth a look (the aircraft, not Mike).

TS423/ N147DC is a C-47A and has been since it left the line in September 1943 Ray Thomas has pictures of TS423 and TS424 on the line together and it still has the radio operators and nav stations behind the pilots seats plus all the cargo points and loading chats by the cargo door

Plus G-DAKS did go to Binbrook for Memphis Bell but was only used as a back drop it was the B-25 Dolly we used as a camera ship and OFC’s Avenger

A lot of good summers knocking around in G-DAKS but my two favourite paint jobs were the SEAC and aero Argentina with the blue and white rudder for Poirot

Just some off the top of my head but for a full list you need to talk to Ray Thomas at North Weald as he worked for Mike from the start until 2008

Sword of Honour 2001
Charlotte Gray 2001
Band of Brothers 2000
Tenko 1981/84
