Help with correct paint samples

I hope its ok to post this as its vaguely aviation related but I cant think of where else to try as none of the usual people I have asked can help, if not suitable than it can be deleted,

anyway…

One of the lads at Supermarine Aero Engineering in Stoke, (Aviation part) is restoring a 1939 Norton motorcycle used a a dispatch riders bike at the start of the war, he is trying to find out the exact correct colour ‘green’ used at the start of the war as he says it changed as the war went on, he describes it as a ‘mucky, browny, green in colour any ideas? he did say if someone had an early wartime tin hat these was the exact colour and if he could borrow one he could get the paint matched

he is also trying to find the corect uniform etc as he wants to ride it to Arnhem next year for some celebrations and he has already bought the leather jerkin which goes over the battledress but as yet cant find a suitable early type army battle dress in size 40″ chest 32″ waist.. any ideas?

he recently bought a proper despatch riders overcoat which turns out to be far larger than described … he says he will use it as part of a swap for a battledress if it helps

So can anyone help, the bike is in bits at the moment but I can ak him for some pics of how it was when he bought it, it came from Holland by the way

Many thanks

Ken

another source

Frank Burbery:

Mike Starmer’s books provide colour chips

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/books/pb/starmer_bacdc.html

These could be matched by a paint supplier – but it can be hit and miss

this might help as well

Repro BD is probably the best bet, as original stuff is now too expensive to wear. Everybody has their own favourite supplier but suggest your friend signs up to the WWIIreenacting.co.uk forums to check out other people’s views. Basically depends on how much you want to spend. Options include Soldier of Fortune or Pegasus Militaria. For applied insignia try Monty’s Locker. For webbing try Sabre Sales in Southsea

He needs ‘khaki green no3’ used pre and early war before changing to SCC no2, similar to dark earth. That changed to SCC no 15 olive drab in early 1944.

Try RR services in Kent or Jeeparts in Shropshire.
