Help with info on wooden prop

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently acquired an old wooden propeller and was looking to find out a bit about it.

If the picture isn’t too clear, the text on the bottom of the prop reads as follows:

DRG NO FP 400/1C-1
D 55 P 5 07
CIRRUS MINOR II
L H T

So I can gather that this was from a Cirrus Minor II engine, but that is about it. If anyone could tell me what sort of plane this would have been used on, I would be very interested.

Also, once identified I would be looking to sell this, so if anyone can place a price on this, please let me know.

many thanks!

Ah yes, the one where the dealer knocked somewhere in the region of 75% off the ticket price. Now why do I seem unable to do such deals in such places? Silly me, that television programme is a product of the BBC TV Fiction department!

Thanks for the answer. Cirrus Minor prop was sold in the programme. Sadly, I could not see all the markings in the shots broadcast.

WZ862, nope. It’s been on a wall in my grandparents/parents house as long as I can remember (and probably longer than I’ve been around! My parents have just moved house and didn’t want to take it to the new place.

Did you buy the propeller from an auction shown on the BBC Celebrity Antiques Roadshow shown 27 November?

More fun on the front of a museum aircraft where it belongs!

I agree!

FP is Fletcher Propellers. As Dave says above, the FP400/2A-1 & -2 are approved for the Auster J1 and Gemini. They are 65 inch diameter and 61 inch pitch. I cannot find a reference to the 1C-1 that you have, but would presume it would be OK on either of the above.

Hi Matty, whilst I cannot identify exactly what aircraft your prop came from, with a bit of detective work we can narrow it down. Based on the Blackburn Cirrus Minor II engine, these aircraft are possiblities; the Auster J/1 Autocrat, Miles Gemini, Miles M.68 and the Newbury Eon. Taking a guess, it’s possible that it is off a Miles Gemini 1C based on its drawing number (the DRG No on the prop) FP.400/1C, but this is only a guess.

The other markings are diameter and pitch, the engine type, which is obvious and Left Hand Tractor, the direction the propeller turns as viewed from the cockpit.

I hope this helps.

Matty -its not worth huge sums -probably £300 if you find someone that wants it to hang on the wall ! Have you got anything else that needs identifying and pricing ?

The nearest I can to is FP/4002A-2. Is of a Miles Gemini.
