I have an old hydraulic pump/motor unit and I was hoping someone on the forum may be able to help me identify what it was used for. It was among my late uncle’s collection of Air Ministry equipment (now in the excellent RAF Signals Museum Henlow). It may not actually be aviation related as there is no wire locking present.
It lacks a manufacturer’s ID plate but the major parts have NORAL xx/1070 markings cast in, with some smaller attachments marked BIRMAL with similar xx/1070 numbers. There are no date stamps.
The unit must have originally been clamped into a larger sealed casing as the pump inlet aperture (underside in pic) has no pipe fitting and the fluid seems to exit the motor either side of the direction control valve (top centre in pics). The mounting clamp centres are 8” apart.
Having been in various attics for decades it was seized up and there was a bit of corrosion inside but I’ve managed to rebuild it with new piston ball bearings and springs. The nut sizes were imperial but the (x28) ball bearings were 17mm diameter. The springs proved harder to match but I found some very close replacements and it all operates smoothly now.
I’ve seen the odd NORAL (Northern Aluminium Company) part on the web but nothing like this or indeed this style of axial pump using cam plates and ball bearings instead of the usual swash plate set up.
