Hallo all,
A friend in France has a P8 compass and a somewhat battered .303 Browning MG. He states they were from a 1940 Fairey Battle crash, but I am not fully sure.
Can anyone please tell me if the Battle was equipped with the P8 compass in 1940 ? I know Spitfires were around this time and that it may have been introduced to the Tiger Moth in 1940 (thanks to Google !).
On the Browning MG. Is it possible to trace which exact aircraft it was fitted to if one has the serial number of the MG ? Somewhat like the USAAF using their MACR system.
Regards,
Martin Gleeson.

Hallo Andy,
Thanks for your help. Pity about the MG numbers. We have a crash location but not the Battle serial number for certain. I was hoping to work backwards to confirm the aircraft serial.
Many thanks again.
Martin.

I ought to know, having dug one up and once having owned the AP for a Fairey Battle! The short answer is “probably”, but I cannot confirm. It would be about the right size. Unfortunately, there is no link from gun numbers to the aircraft record card (AM Form 78) or aircraft accident/loss reports I’m afraid.
However, if you know the location in France it might help tie it into a known incident perhaps?
