Hendon Bomber Hall

I was having another squint at the Hendon video you can get there, and when showing their ‘behind the scenes’ section, they show the large pile of various chunks of Stirling that they hold. Now, even if it’s not even anywhere near being decided what to do with them long-term, why on earth don’t they put what they’ve got on some sort of display in the Bomber Hall anyway? They were quick enough to lay out the worse-condition Hampden as soon as they got it, and nobody here should need to be told that the Stirling is sadly absent in all but model form from the whole of Hendon.

Maybe they could re-think their ‘Dambusters’ corner of the hall, with it’s space-sapping Barnes Wallis office (surely more suited to Brooklands anyway) and get at least some pieces of these old girls out on show?

RE: Hendon Bomber Hall

Peter-no, the Stirling pieces are shown on a VIDEO you can buy from the shop at Hendon. From memory, there’s a chunk of fuselage, a little bit of a wing panel, and a few other bits and bobs-certainly enough to make an interesting display in the Hall and give the old Stirling boys something to look at.

Get rid of the Vulcan?! Well, I’ll say that it doesn’t do it any visual favours having it’s nose probe about three millimetres from the corner of the building…

Arguably, if you were going to start representing individual designers with things like office recreatons, you’d be wanting to start with RJ or someone like that. Really though, it takes up a lot of space in that corner of the Hall, and seems a little pointless to me.

I can’t help thinking that it might be best to donate thier Stirling bits to the Stirling Project. They’re hoping to build a complete Stirling to static condition using original and scratchbuilt components-not easy when the drawings went up in smoke years ago!I’m sure the RAFM’s parts would be invaluable to them,if only on loan.

Agree totally about the Stirling.

Disagree vehemently about the Barnes Wallis office.

I love it. I spend hours waiting for the old boy to walk back in from lunch.

If we need space for the wreckage let’s rid of the Vulcan I say.
