Hendon chaos!

Anyone seen Hendon lately?

The new buildings shooting up so quick! Nice to see the Graham White hangar being sorted at last. (I suppose they will fill it with plastic screens, tacky signs and some trendy wine bar)

Oh and the Beaufort is so much better now you can see it from the stairs.

Whats the purpose of the Merlin? It looks lovely but surely would be more suited to Cosford’s collection?

Why 2 Harts at Hendon?

The lower gallery is gutted – any idea whats going on in there as the Gladiator wreck is now in the main hall and the Nissen Hut diorama is gone alltogether.

Did I hear somthing about another replica control tower? Wheres that going? Whoever allows the original tower to be pulled down while building a replica should be hung!

RE: Hendon chaos!

I like all the chaos, I like the feeling that things are moving, giving chances that wont be repeated, to see various airframes in different locations, for example the chance to get a picture of the top of the Beaufort, the Typhoon parked across the other side next to the phantom etc. I wish they had kept the Sptfire 1 next to the MK24 and sent BL614 to Cosford instead though.

Better than seeing the same airframes in the same place all the time. And you never know whats arriving. Why the 2 Harts though?

RE: Hendon chaos!

Hi All

I think your being a little harsh on Hendon. I read this thread last week and decided to pop in there on Saturday (the joys of living local and it being free).

The new building’s up and look’s huge, the hangers been moved and looks compleat but you can’t get near enough to see. In the main hall there are a few changes, the lower gallery at the side is closed and the Merlin does look out of place but it’s only waiting to go into the new building. “Sugar’s” wing tips are still off and it looks like they have been doing some work underneath her but I don’t know what. The B17 has gained it’s own Budgie perch in the form of a pile of railway sleepers, this looks like it was done so the mustang fits under the wing.

Considering that all the changes are for the new building and when it opens it’s almost going to double the space I think a little disruption is going to happen. Next year when they start moving the aircraft into their new homes it’s going to be even more chaotic with some airplanes out of sight for quite a while. All this has got to be worth it, I can’t wait for it all to be compleated. Hopefully then they can turn thier attentions to some of the other problems, the leaking roof in the bomber hall for one.

Peter

PS If Ashleigh ever wanted a change of scene, the B17 has at least an inch of dust and the Vulcan…

RE: Hendon chaos!

She’s probably being moved aside again to allow things in and out of the main doors behind her, like was done some years ago-though they had a wing off her to do all that, too. I actually think that it wouldn’t hurt to take ‘Sugar’ off display for a few months and completely restore her inside and out, as she’s been in there since ’73 and she could do with some tidying up-particularly inside.

The plan is to open the Milestones of Flight building on 17 December 2003 at precisely the time that Wilbur Wright made the first flight on 17 December 1903. I think that makes it around 3 p.m. UK time.

Like I’ve said, if they choose to go that route, God help them when they get the bill for the seed.

No doubt if the Gents at Hendon ran out of bog paper, they’d say it was ‘down to re-arranging for the new building’, so I suspect that’s the answer to everything else there for now, too.
