Hendon Fire?

Without wishing to be alarmist, especially on top of the terrible Blenheim news, ‘Sally Traffic’ on Radio 2 has just said that some roads were closed in North London ‘due to a serious fire at ‘RAF Hendon’.

Anyone?!! 😮

Perhaps it would be easier for us to mention the things Hendon has which aren’t unique? Certainly, all the manuscript collections, photographs, uniforms, medals, etc, are mostly irreplaceable. And that’s not even touching on the aircraft…

However, as someone who works for one of the national museums, I am sure that Hendon will have pretty sophisticated smoke detectors and sprinkler systems throughout the site, plus the gas system in DoRIS mentioned already.

Or if it was the Battle of Britain Hall there’s the Defiant, CR42, Ju88, Me110, BoB veteran 609 Sqn Spitfire. And the non-airframe artifacts; medals, uniforms, artwork, operational records…

Don’t forget about the Chain Home receiver (an RF8, should anyone really care) on display, one of the few surviving artifacts left of the early warning system which protected us during the war. This receiver cetainly IS unique!

Yes there is. Bristol Bulldog IV BU-59 C/N 7810 is in the Halli Aircraft Museum, Finland according to my ancient copy of European Wrecks and Relics.

Somebody mentioned the Wallace in an earlier post, has it gone to Cosford yet? Does anyone know why it is going there – to be fitted with wings perhaps?!

Does the museum have a sprinkler & other fire mitigation measures?

I know, from having done research there, that DoRIS does have a fire protection system, if there is a fire you’ve got only a little time to clear the dept before it fills with something to stop a fire taking hold. Some sort of inert gas I imagine. Mind you it wont help if the rest of the building’s gone up in flames, gravity is against you!!

Was it the French Musee de L’air that had a bad fire some years ago, they lost a Spit I seem to remember. Then there was the CWH fire. Just goes to show they aren’t safe on the ground either.

Ashley – Erm can’t really get my head round that especially as
‘Sally Traffic’ relies a lot on driver reports and not the BBC itself for information ! Still if it wasn’t for the BBC we might have actually believed that Iraq could ready chemical warheads in fourty five minutes or indeed that the popular uprising in Basra actually happened !

I usually find the phone useful…..

No fire. Faulty fire alarm went off.

End of story. Hardly newsworthy!
