Hendon Lancaster on Perch (NOT!)

If I read another posting that says that the Lancaster at Hendon is on a perch I’ll scream. It’s not and hasn’t been since about March and this is not another rumour – go see. On Sunday I was definitely going up hill to get to the cockpit. And if I have my way it’ll stay that way.

I don’t know what ‘original’ was ever found/left on her, but I was certainly under the impression that everything you see on Sugar was applied when she went into Hendon in the 70’s.

Der,
In answer to your question, there was bomb missions and the quote left on the aircraft when it was striped of paint before it entered the museum in 1971, but is a matter of debate if this was original.
Photos of R5868 at on the gate at Scampton show the mission bomb markings and the quote in a slightly different location to wartime photos.
It would appear that this was all repainted after the aircraft entered Hendon. There needs to be some more research on this before there is any work done on this area (which will not be for sometime).

The mission markins and famous saying are original

The mission markings etc are original and were never removed when she was paint stripped.

Carrying on from a recent thread, wouldnt it be nice if PA474 was painted as Queenie in her next respray, Sugar in Hendon and Queenie in the air, a fitting tribute to her crews. And then they could roll Sugar out and have a picture of her on the ground with Queenie flying over.

And then they could paint London Bridge pink

And then……….NURSE!!!!

Isnt the “artwork” original? I saw photos some years ago of it stripped of paint before going inside and the bomb markings and Goerings quote on the port side were still there.

In answer to some of the above questions (and others), I’m afraid the wing tips are still not on, still a bit more moving around of other exhibits is going on.
The engineers panel has been there the two years I have worked on the aircraft, I’ll try and find out who did any work on it in the past.
There is no further work currently on the inside at the present time. I like to share some photos of the inside, but I’d get into trouble with the Museum!
None of the paint on external surfaces is original and even if it was you may have to sacrifice it if the metal itself needs treatment. The aircraft was almost totally bare metal when it entered the Museum in about 1971 and was repainted inside the aircraft hall. However, some of the panels removed from around the engines have what is believed to be original paint on the inside. As the metal on the inside is in excellent condition, this paint is not being removed and the inside of the panels are just being cleaned of oil and grime – although visitors will never be aware of this fact.

LOL! Yes, I know the Lanc has been down for a little while, presumably as part of the ‘shift it out of the way’ activities for the movement of airframes to the new building, but one has to fear her being put back up there with a fresh piece of millet afterwards!

David, who was responsible for the Flight Engineer’s panel which has appeared in recent years? When I was last in there years ago, I turned around to take a picture of it, and there wasn’t one! Anything else going on with her interior?

🙂
