Here's an Ebay auction to watch…

Gordon Howell was building a replica Lancaster cockpit. Sadly, he passed away a few weeks ago. His family are now auctioning the project on Ebay.

The lots can be viewed by following this link and then clicking on “view sellers other items”.

Happy bidding!

Tell me about it!

My eBay user name is Tizard, so you’ll know it’s me if you see that. It’s usually photos or other small items (which are cheap to post!) that I bid on, but having just bought ‘Those Other Eagles’ by Christopher Shores, I don’t have much cash for anything else. 🙁

Thanks for the compliment, but I wish I had the cash!

I did have a look at some of the items, but the cost of delivery would have been too steep for me (about £40) and I don’t have the money to pay the kinds of prices the items were fetching.

Having said all this, if the items go to a good home where they are appreciated and, hopefully, are on public display, I’ll be more than happy. Even if it’s somewhere too far away for me to visit, it’s still better than seeing then skipped!

Blast , I was convinced it was you Ian – would have been a nice collection for you .

I wonder if RadarArchive ( Ian ) is behind radarhist1 – looks like he bought a fair bit – if it is then its gone to a good home .

Message for ‘e-snipers’

Please bid lower so that people who don’t value the item as highly as you have a chance of winning.

I wonder what this will be worth then when finished 😀 Don’t worry I will never sell it.

But I can tell you that the Lanc throttle box went to a good home and will be used in a Lancaster cockpit section.

Cheers

£10,255 must be something like 10 times what the panel is worth! Has the world gone mad!

I am often wary of buyers with zero feedback, but this guy has plenty! He must really want a Lancaster panel! Like Mk12, I will start my production run on Monday!

What a great shame that Mr Howells was not to acheive his dream. He had amassed an incredible collection and had obviously done a lot of work. I note he had made more than one instrument panel.

One thing I would like to say is that those photos on all the ebay listings of all the panels and ancilliery equipment provide a great reference source for modellers, especially colour references. You don’t normally see all the bits by themselves and with such good close ups, and in good light.

cant blame iramoo001 for not trying for the panel.. and the canopy..

Everyone seem to be using esnipe over there…all final bids are around 10-6 seconds under the closing time.

Yes and the eBay computer threw a glitch.

It posted all the bidding amounts before the end of the auction. 😮

It is fixed now with over an hour to run.

Sad to hear of the loss of Mr Howell.
Just had a look at Ebay. Crikey !!! is my polite response. However, having untertaken a few projects, all be it in the car world, as far as I am concerned the panels, canopy & fuselage section are the most important parts that need to be safely secured. This is all relative of course. I appreciate the time spent hunting down parts & units but the time & effort spent in (re) manufacturing the aforementioned parts is significant.

I wish Tracer Adlam luck if he is going to attempt to complete the project.

Good post Cees!

Isn’t that how it always starts. Something like:

Hey, why don’t I collect some instruments to make a nice instrument panel. Before you know it, you are hooked and something like a cockpit section is beginning to evolve. I started out that way too.

So Peter, prepare yourself for some serious Halifax cockpit building time
:

Isn’t that the truth Cees! Although with a litle luck and a boatload of cash we will have a real Halfax cockpit to work on and not have to worry about building a replica one LOL 😀

I knew he was after a lancaster panel and kind of figured he would be expanding into a cockpit section eventually! i wonder what scheme he will paint it up as… if he gets it

I have been in contact with Graham in the past and with very good results, so I hope that he eventually succeeds in building a cockpit section.

Thanks Mark for your views regarding e-bay, of course it has it’s good points and you should be sure what you wish to spend, but there are items put on e-bay where the description Spitfire or Lancaster is enough to send prices through the roof, even if it is just a general item. Apart from serious collectors who are restoring or rebuilding things or trying to make a nice collection there are also people after easy money, but that has always been the case so nothing new here.

Cheers

Cees
