The fat one had Manfred Von Richthofen’s walking stick or geschwaderstock as it was known, wonder what happened to that after the war…. would be a interesting piece to own.

With a little more detail, WL745, we could probably work out who.

This badge was given to my mother from a German airmans body washed up on the shore near Amble in Northumberland. Thought to be from a Helnkel 111 shot down. One eagle is missing.

I know nothing about cars but for what it’s worth I saw a big Mercedes in the Canadian War Museum back in the 1970’s which I was told belonged to Hermann Goering. It was claimed to be his staff car and had umpteen coats of paint, the colour being changed from black to green and back again according to what state duties he was carrying out.

However a quick check on Google shows that was all a misconception and it was subsequently proved to be Hitler’s car. It’s an interesting story especially if you are into cars. This is the link.

It some how reminds me of Major Neuheims car, built by the Technical Section of the SS, in the brilliant mini series ‘Private Schulz’

The full story of the “Goering” Mercedes is in Wheels and Tracks No 4. It had nothing to do with Goering but was build for the RSD later in 1943/44 – according to the factory records – which still exist in the Mercedes archives.

THAT’S the car I saw being restored, you can even see the bullet hit, on the passengers side windscreen, and the rivets in the floor pan.

There some marvellous footage on British Pathe, which I can’t link on my mobile, of “the car” captured in Schleswig Holstein and being driven by its owner in Berkhamsted.

This is his car. I understand it’s now owned by a group of UK investors.

John, the one I saw being restored many, many yrs ago, was Black, and only one bullet hole in the screen. It was also fully documented.Wish I could find the photo of it.:(

Yes, those are they.

Eric Campion was the chap who had the medals. Seemed surreal to see them in that same frame hanging up in a bungalow in Bognor!

I think he had many different ‘uniforms’…

He was known to change clothes as often as three or four times a day, possibly due to profuse sweating from his obesity.

some er fairly erm erm eccentric ?

Especially in the privacy of Karin Hall: a toga for presiding over a party…a fur-trimmed robe for dining…and for perusing his ill-gotten art collection, a Baroque men’s suit complete with ruffled shirt, brass-buckle shoes, and brandy sniffer. He said that it put him into a better frame of mind for appreciating the Old Masters.

Back to the uniform, and is it or isn’t it?

Way back in the late 70s I had a letter from a chap telling me how he had all of Goering’s medals and badges. I took it with a pinch of salt but as he was local I popped to see him and was blown away by the display in a case hanging in the hall of his bungalow. They were the real deal and he had bought them for £25 from Spinks in about 1947. They had been sold them by a GI, and they were still in the original brown paper package tied up with string (isn’t that a line from a song with certain Nazi connections?!) when he bought them and he still had that packaging.

I will post photos when I can find them later, but I think I am correct in saying the medals are now at Hendon? So, as regards this uniform……never say never!

Yes, his uniforms didn’t fit anymore. They dried him out and put him on a diet. Probably had to, he would have been too fat to hang.

I was the one that told him he was going to have to go on a diet,
Goering replied ” YOUR FATIST “

I replied, NO, YOU ARE FATEST !
