Whatever happened to Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice pick
That made his ears burn
Whatever happened to dear old Lenin?
The great Elmyra, and Sancho Panza?
Whatever happened to the heroes…?
So sang The Stranglers; but whatever did happen to the heroes?
We can be heroes, just for one day… – David Bowie.
Who are your heroes?
Go on, give us a clue!;)

Did you forget (or might you have forgotten) the merchant seamen, the army, the Royal Navy, all in the RAF that do not get emcompassed in the description above, the workers and repairers, the police and the Observer Corps? All the others who did their part? Those from other nations who did similar jobs both here and abroad?
They also served.

Didn’t forget any of them, but your original question asked who MY heroes were. As I once had serious aspirations to fly for the RAF, I spent a lot of time learning about The Few, and the crews of Bomber Command (who incidentally, and rather disgustingly IMHO, were never awarded a campaign medal), as these were the men displayed the standards of courage and bravery that I may one day have had to live up to.

I’d like to add the unsung heroes and heroines of the present day Health Service, who go the extra mile.
Not doctors and nurses, for a change, but alll the others who never get a mention.

To a lesser degree, there are also some sportsmen who I have a great deal of admiration for; Ayrton Senna, Steve Redgrave, David Hirst, Chris Waddle – but while these guys are ‘heroes’ in their chosen field, they ain’t a patch on any of the wartime RAF lads.
