I seem to recall seeing the rear fuselage of Rudolf Hess’s Me110 at Duxford a few years back, but haven’t seen it since. Does anyone know whether it’s on public display anywhere?

These were taken at the IWM at Lambeth in 2000.

There’s also a prop blade from Hess’ 110 in the RAFA building in Ayr – a rather excellent little museum/exhibition if you get the chance to visit.

Lancman…nope! DV372 was written off in October 1945, and the cockpit section donated to the Museum in 1946…we have no idea what happened to the rest of the aircraft, although as Eddie says, I think we can guess! 🙁

…and we STILL don’t know what ever happened to the rest of that Lanc, do we?!
I can have a pretty good guess, Lancman!

Thanks guys. I knew someone out there would know the answer. And you’ve also reminded me that I’ve not been to IWM Lambeth in years. One for 2004, I think…

I was at IWM Lambeth just a few weeks back and Hess’ fuselage was there tucked into a corner on the upstairs flight gallery alongside the Lanc and Hali noses etc. It’s in reasonably good shape considering it’s age, the paintwork is in good nick.It used to just be on open display, but I think people were either damaging it or perhaps cutting themselves on the jagged bits,so it now has a glass screen around most of it.The reason it’s tucked into a corner is that the right hand side was badly damaged at the time-the oxygen bottles on the 110 were positioned inside the right hand face of the rear fuselage, and it seems soemone on the RAF ‘wreckovery’ team decided to cut away the whole area to get at the bottles, hence whacking great hole where the black cross used to be.In displaying it on the corner, they’re displaying it’s good side (and the side that people are less likely to cut themselves on.)
One of the DB601’s is also displayed alongside, although for reasons best known to themselves, they’ve mounted it upside-down.
