Here’s a of couple links to a nice CGI model of the beast…

It would be interesting to see if a virtual model could be used to test the viability of the Heston design, doesn’t the ‘X-Plane’ simulator offer a chance to see if the design was capable of obtaining the world speed record all those years ago…
There must be enough data kicking around to at least build a scale RC model or a computer flight simulator available that would enable to test whether the Type 5’s flight characteristics were able to achieve its original goal… Or is this not possible?

A gorgeous looking aeroplane and those CGI graphics are stunning.
But….Hmmm…..
The legendary reliability of a Napier Sabre engine…..
A cooling system that was boiling within two minutes…..
And a lateral control/stability system that was patently neither…..
I think this is one replica project that we’re better just dreaming about and looking at the nice pictures!! :diablo:

What became of them?
I wonder what became of them? Having looked at the books in my library that make reference to them, they are silent as to the fate of the remains of ‘FOK (simply described as damaged beyond repair) and the 60% complete airframe of ‘FOL (desribed as not completed). Presumably they went as scrap to aid the war effort. Or does anyone know different?

any napier sabre’s still exist? would be a hell of a thing to recreate and really find out if it was capable of 500mph! 😀
Was looking at one today that is part of the superb display of aero engines at Rolls Royce’s Learning and Education Centre (?) Derby. Magnificent beast it is too.

It rings a bell that Skysport were behind the plans for a “new” Heston Napier racer but that was a fair time ago now and it has gone quiet. It must have been a difficult project and maybe it is one of those things that will be progressed as and when finances and time allow.

There was a plan a long time ago to ressurect it, but that came to nough.

Probably the most beautiful aeroplane ever…………….
I know that I have said it before (and it’s likely that I’ll say it again – ad nauseam) but the Heston Racer is the most elegant aeroplane ever to have come out of the UK. But for the second world war…………………..?

Somebody recently told me of one sitting in the back of a garage down south……………

Typhoon
Should a spare Sabre or two be kicking around and available for use, I can think of another type which would be infinitley more deserving of resurection.
And there’s already a fair amount kicking about………

Must have been quite some aircraft to be able to fly a circuit at 20 mph!
