A******** Monthly are advertising a look behind the scenes of the HFL hanger.
It is 10am to 3.30pm on saturday 12th June, and there is to be a Spitfire display including PV202 & a Mk14 amongst others.
Oh and it’s all for £55.00 a head.

Robbo, i took the liberty of making your picture more acceptable, we mustn’t mention the other magazine 😉 nice colour, the blue and the yellow are both nice but it depends on what you are wearing i guess. 🙂

Conservative
There’s nothing Conservative about paying 55 quid.
Shame we’ve got to look like a Crufts winner (or in my case, runner up), but I hope that it will be worthwhile.
I will post some pics for those who would rather hang onto their folding stuff.
With the blue rosette, yellow pass and red face no one will know who gets my vote.:D

They’re not re-starting ‘you’ve been framed’ are they ?
First you have to pay £55, then you have to turn up at Duxford wearing a badge that makes you look like a winner at the local donkey derby.
Wonder what they’ll do to you all next ???
(any suggestions ?)

Left out
I feel really left out now. For my 55 quid I got a blue rosette. Does this mean I’m out of the medal positions?

Hmmm, the ones my sister usually wins with her horses are at least a bit more colourfull! 😀

Good to see that they’re not throwing away all those £55’s on tacky promotional gear !

“10:30 – 12:30 Retractions of the undercarriage of a spitfire”
… 12.32 Opportunity to learn and assist in the old RAF phrase “TWO SIX YOU ‘ORRIBLE LOT” as Spitfire is brought back from resting on Rads.
Seriously. It’a a good idea, you pays your money, you takes your choice, or not. FWIW, both John R and Smudge are excellent at explaining their jobs, and admerable blokes all round.
Blenheim. First resto 15 years. Second resto 7 years. Third resto 15 mins, and rinse repeat cycle. book now to avoid disapointment… Not a bad acceleration!
Cheers

I should have worn a loose shirt or gone on a diet. I could only eat fish and chips for the three weeks of waiting in prime position for the show.

Of course, it meant I could get this:

Although Bob followed it with this:

It’s rather steep, but then again, it’s a pricey business. Nope. Not for me – but I must say my Bruce tour in the past was well worth the money. Oh to have a repeat!
As requested:

What about those who are going to go and are Friends Of Duxford members? They get in free, so there should be a reduction in price to cover that.

55 pounds? That is a bit steep for a few hours the other side of the fence, coffee and a flying display. As many people have said, Historic Flying Mark 1 had open days/fly in days every summer. I think we paid somewhere between £5.00 – £10.00 for a food donation and what ever money was left over went to a charity.
I lived in Saffron Walden at the time and it was nice to be given the opportunity to see what was going on just up the road from home. I went to many of these days and they were one of the things that made Historic Flying stand out from the rest in those days. Every year one or more of the spitfires flew. Black 6 displayed one year as did many other regulars from Duxford that were just passing through. This was a social event, not a commercial venture. You could get close to the aircraft, look around the faculty, talk to the engineers and pilots and if you were lucky, you even had a chance to fly with someone.
Many of the aircraft now in the HFL/ARCo hangars have been seen outside in various other hangars, so I would be reluctant to pay to see these aircraft in the “live side” hangars.
Where is the £55.00 going to? A charity? or HFL/ARCo’s pockets. If it going to the Blenheim rebuild, fair enough, but I cannot see HFL giving their slice to that particular fund.
I think I will save my money on this occasion, remember the good times and instead go to Duxford on the 9th of May to support the Merlins Over Malta day. I’d much rather donate my money to that cause.
Rant over with…

Pimpernel,
Yes, and the price you paid was for Mark’s burgers; not for the tour!
I never minded giving up my time to show people round.
Ho hum!
Bruce

Bloody hell , I thought you lot were only kidding about using step ladders !!:D , is this a regular occurence??
By: pimpernel - 7th March 2004 at 06:58
Fifty five quid….!!!
I can remember not long ago before HFL moved to Duxford from Audley End, an open day used to cost under a tenner.
These were just like fetes but with a walk around the hanger and you could talk to the engineers too.
These open days used to be like a thank you to the local people of Saffron Walden for putting up with the noise etc. and was only advertised locally.
Now they are at Duxford, I suppose they have to be a money making machine too.
Take off the entrance fee to the airfield and you still have a high price to pay.
I hope those who do go will find it well worth it, enjoy..
BP:rolleyes:
