HHA Buccaneer to be on Static at Scampton Airshow.

The news this morning is that HHA’s Buccaneer XX885/G-HHAA is to be rolled out of storage to appear on the static display line at Scampton Airshow in September. Presumably this is a rare opportunity to see this aeroplane.

The flier that is still in/will probably fly in Germany is ZK848 (38+48 IIRC) and the static here doesn’t have a UK military serial.

IIRC the F-4F has been allocated a UK Military registration

With next year being the RAF Centennial I wonder whether the organisers of RIAT and the RAF could be convinced that a chronological line up of major airframes would be worth investing in.

Yes, the Phantom’s a very striking and popular exhibit, T.O. and it is a pleasure to take it to, or leave it, at places where it is appreciated.

If I was rich, which I am not, then I’d happily move it around at my own expense, just for fun and a weekend away. I don’t like charging more than a couple of quid for folk to enter the cockpit as I think it should be cheap. The idea of making it a fiver (or more) to cover the cost of the transport would mean it becomes, in essence, a commercial operation, which, as tempting as it is, I am reluctant to do.

Geoff, the situation is summed up by scotavia’s post; also the Phantom cockpit XV490 is on loan to NAM from Anon and it was through him that the temporary display move was being organised as detailed in post #11

NAM’s days of attending Airshows with displays are long gone – with the museum open 362 days per year they have all on to keep that covered.

As a slight aside; I came across an interesting letter the other day from summer 1988 – when NAM approached the RAF to lift Lightning XS417 from Binbrook to Winthorpe with a Chinook (as part of a training exercise). Even then the RAF suggested that using a civilian company might be the preferable option and should be explored first! I understand that letter may soon be appearing via their Twitter feed!

Geoff, the days of the RAF having spare MT have long gone, many transport moves are made by civvy trucks and contract drivers and when you have to pay up for extra moves it gets very tight.

Hi All,
T.O,
I know this is an unconventional suggestion but here goes anyway 😉

What about sharing the cost or perhaps approaching the RAF offering to share the cost again say a three way split if they took the opportunity as a
transport exercise ? I am sure they would have more than enough MT Drivers and units going begging for it ?

“That would be nice, T.O. but the organisers of the Scampton show won’t shell out for transport for ‘490 to and from Newark, nor can they offer us any overnight accommodation due to it being “very limited” (presumably only for display crews).

I’m not prepared, nor can I afford, to cover the cost from my own pocket so, therefore, no pay – no Phantom!

That’s a shame – XV490’s current display location by Hangar 2 at NAM seems to be quite popular with visitors; the school visit today liked it!

They are too busy for RIAT at the minute I believe.

The Hunter is now listed on the “cancelled” list on the RIAT website.

As Evalu8ter said,

Also, HHA aircraft are flown under MAA rules, hence the reason why they have been flying Hunters since Shoreham.

They are also a defence contractor first and foremost, not a display organisation (despite their origins being with the OFMC). The Bucc and SU22 have been kept in proper storage, with anti-det runs and essential maintenance such that in the event of a contract with sufficient work (i.e. profit…), the final legal and engineering hoops can be jumped through and the aircraft flown. They also fly their Hunters predominantly on the UK Mil register nowadays so, despite the civil registration of the Bucc, I would imagine it would more likely fly with its mil ID. I imagine the same with the F4 if it arrives. No bucks, no bucc I’m afraid…….

Hi All,
I contacted HHA awhile back and they say it’s down to the current CAA that none of their jets are able to fly, and I doubt if the Shoreham incident did
anything to further that decision along anybody any updates with that would be welcome…;)

Su27?

Su22, yes, that’s what I meant.

A big and impressive machine. Nice to hear they’re rolling it out.

According to their newsletter they’re putting their Su22 Fitter and F4 Phantom on static display as well as the Buccaneer and Hunter….
