How many actual Buchons are flying these days? How many ACTUAL Bf-109’s are flying these days if any?
Someone’s bound to correct me, but I think its:
Bf109s – One in Canada (not counting the one that was recently being ground-tested)
Buchons –
3 ex-Buchons in Germany, all converted to DB605 power (D-FEHD, D-FMBB & D-FWME)
4 in the States (N109ME, N109GU, N109W and N700E)
Possibly another in Belgium, but I’m not sure if the Vormezelle example has flown for some time (OO-MAF)

Just put a Buchon up on the wallpaper page yesterday, maybe it’ll tide you guys over until that British example is flying:

That Buchon looks great, if you ask me they look nicer than the BF 109’s and make a great stand in for them.
For gawd’s sake, don’t let Phil (aka Stormbird262) hear you say that! He’d flip his lid – mind you, it’s flipped enough as it is! 😉

IIRC,the problem which caused the accident to the Planes of Fame example was that solid pipes had been used in parts of the braking system where flexible hosing would’ve been better suited to the job. A solid brake line fractured, causing the brake problems.

I seem to recall NX700E being fitted with “P-39 brakes”, which were better than the ones previously fitted, probably for the reasons Mark12 has just given.

Buchon brakes
Just speculating.
It might be improved braking or response time to counter an incipient ‘ground loop’, for which the Buchon has a well justified and poor reputation.

Daz, my understanding is that this particular mod is well-proven in the ‘States and has been implemented at the request of the aircraft’s owner and the operator for safety reasons. I’m not an engineer so it’s all a bit of a mystery to me but surely you can only apply a certain amount of brake pressure anyway without the aircraft nosing over…

Davski – were the brake checks ordered as a result of the slight mishap with Planes of Fame’s Buchon when it was over here filming Pearl Harbor in 2000?
I seem to recall that being brake-related, although I stand to be corrected, natch.

The Spitfire belonged to Rob Fleming, the Mustang belongs to Tony Smith… I see nothing unusual in the fact that Rob sold his aircraft and Tony bought a new one.
The powers that be have insisted that certain parts of the Buchon brake system be thoroughly strength tested in the laboratory – these tests have now been successfully completed and the brakes reassembled. The Buchon has been rebuilt to fly and, when the authorities are satisfied that will, I’m sure, be the case. In the meantime the Hurri’ has just completed a series of engine tests and should be fit and well to join the Mustang in the air during the next few weeks. Finger’s crossed the Buchon will join in the fun.

Funny, I was just thinking about the Buchon earlier today…

I think that the lack of bookings may have something to do with people stealing all of the good photo’s of it.

Russ, haven’t they got another Spitfire that they hope to restore in the long term? Might be wrong but that was my understanding.
Yes they do have another spitfire for a long term restoration.

They were hoping to have her on the ‘curcuit’ last year, it will be well worth the wait! 😀
Interesting how the Spitfire has now gone and they have now aquired the Mustang. I wonder what the ‘thinking’ behind that was? (Just Curious 😮 )
Hoping to get up to Breighton for an open day this year!

No it is not a flying example yet but they are aiming to make it a flyer in the near future. Here it is at home on Breighton Airfield in July last year
