Does anyone know any history about,or have any old photo’s of a De Havilland Canada Chipmunk reg: G-AKDN.
I know it was based in Norfolk for many years prior to that had been raced in various Kings Cup and Daily Express Air Races ,and had been used for evaluation prior to the Chipmunk entering service with the R.A.F.although this one never went into service and has been ‘civillian’ all her life
thanks

Take a look at the Air Britain photo site. There are six photos of G-AKDN including this one:

This is G-AKDN seen in 1986 at the Farnborough International Airshow.
Must be one of the oldest around and have one of the nicest schemes in this old photo too, simple colours but just perfect and fresh looking.

She sure does look great in silver…
I’ve got a bunch of pix of G-AKDN from her visit to the Toronto Aerospace Museum during the Chipmunk 60th-anniversary celebrations back in the spring. No way of posting same unfortunately (my cameras are old celluloid-burners)…But iirc Eric Dumigan’s website has some very fine shots of her including some A2A taken during the same visit. Polished metal/cream/BRG: classiest example I’ve ever seen of what is always a classy type!

For many years, I believe it was based at Seething with the Waveney Flying Group.

In 1946 two Chipmunks, pre-production prototype aircraft numbers 10 & 11, were shipped in packing cases from Canada to England for test flying and evaluation at de Havillands main production site at Hatfield. No 10 was to crash , but number 11 civilian registered G-AKDN has survived, and until Friday 5th July 2002 was hangered and flown from Bagby by Philip Derry, the original test pilot’s Great Nephew. It is now on its way home!

The Black/Gold Chippie is G-ALWB, now at Duxford in Cream/Red..

Steve, this probably won’t be much help, but there was a Chipmunk in at Skysport about a year ago for refurb, can’t remember the reg, but it was black and gold, and if my memory serves it was a pure civvie Chipmunk in that it had never served with the forces. Not many of them around, as most appear to be ex-AEF or ex-AAC.
