Historic Glider collection

On the way to my parent’s a few weeks ago I passed RAF Bicester via the Bicester ring road, and the doors of one of the hangars visible from said road were open.

Is there a large collection of historic gliders in there somewhere, or are my mince pies deceiving me?

Not sure quite how many buildings are Listed or somehow protected against unauthorised demolition or alteration, but I do know that English Heritage and others rate its architecture very highly and are keen to see as much of it preserved for future generations as possible. It is deemd to be the classic pre-WW2 RAF Expansion Period station without hard runways – ie the original grass landing ground – and is in very original condition too. It will be interesting to see what happens with the sale. The MoD of course would rather see it flattened and turned into an extension of Bicester town…..

RAF GSA

The RAF GSA Centre has moved out to Halton. Bicester is now the home (since July 2004) of the Windrushers Gliding Club, a civilian club. The airfield is on the market as a listed site, with expressions of interest due in no later than next week.

Would be lovely to see Bicester as a ‘civil’ airfield. Lots of lovely grass and a couple of great big hangars. Sadly light airfields don’t make much money.

The site has been advertised for sale in aviation magazines. Some of the buildings are listed and the suggested uses are as a business community or a civil airfield!

There is no formal collection its the HQ of the RAFGSA, the RAF’s gliding club, plus a lot of private ones. Has been a axe hanging over the base for years but it seems to survive.
