Historic helicopter in ASDA car-park shock!

Yesterday evening I was making my weary way to the supermarket and as I pulled into a space what should greet my sight but a stowed and covered Westland Wasp in RN blue. Parked. At ASDA Colchester. Bizarre I think you’ll agree. Anyway, I managed to leave without checking the serial which wasn’t immediately obvious, so can’t check which helo it might have been. There was a chap in a white van obviously guarding it, and the supermarket staff thought it was there to raise money for something. From Culdrose perhaps? The van lacked Royal Navy; Meet Interesting People and Torpedo Them or similar, it was blank as far as I recall.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it wasn’t my ever so posh sister in law?
She loves to shop and perhaps her Mercedes was in the shop? 😀

In October 2001 & June 2002, a Wasp (XT788 – but marked as XT78? – G-BMIR) was displayed in the main shopping area at Bexleyheath, owned by Xray Tango Helicopter Club, its home is at Dunkeswell, if this is the same aircraft.

Geoff.

You’re from Bexleyheath? Cause I lived there for a year as well. I have also seen that Wasp, June 29th 2002 at the Broadway shopping centre.

If it wasn’t for the fact it’s a helicopter I’d have popped down at lunchtime to take a look…..

It’ been to Tesco’s in Banbury in it’s time too. It is used to raise money for Charity – which escapes me at the moment – but I believe there is no serial to confuse those who like to crunch the numbers (or if there is it’s a wrong ‘un). Think listed in a W&R somewhere…
