Historic items

This may have been covered and excuse a newby question, but I’m sure most off us have various historic relics from many different types of aircraft.
As a budding collector with a very modest budget, where is the best place to start a collection, eBay? If so how can you avoid the pitfalls of every item being from a spit or very rare, is there a way to help prove authenticity?
I suppose I would love a genuine spitfire part but is this beyond me?
I know it’s a difficult question.

Thanks for the tips, I must admit I buy a lot of food production equipment and always set in my mind a price I think it’s worth and stick to it. But then I do know what that sort of thing is worth.
So what does anyone think of this (sorry if it’s from a forum member)

Sorry about the link as it’s not the eBay thread, but it says spit?? Is there any chance or is it just a generic part?

From my own experience.

Being in Sweden any RAF bits and pieces can only be bought online and I’ve used eBay a lot but I got a bit over excited in the beginning and paid a lot for what I thought was “rare” and then suddenly there was an influx of the same thing.

* Only pay what it’s worth to you.
* The bus principle seems to be true – you wont see a part for ages then 8 come along at once.
* Anything rare, Spitfire, Lancaster, Battle of Britain or Dambusters probably isn’t.
* Don’t get carried away or in a bidding war just to win. Bid your max and if you lose, walk away.
* Be aware that sellers can see how many people are watching an item. It’s not uncommon for them to shill bid to try and drive the price up.
* For lords sake, be aware of postage fees/charges.
* Learn to sniper bid and not play your hand too early :diablo:

you have to watch out for all those items listed as from WW2 Spitfire or Lancaster as most small parts like clocks, knobs n dials etc could fit most aircraft of that time period. everyone on ebay seems to think they were the only aircraft in the fight!!!!

Yes. I have a Spitfire starter button that was actually a Canberra bomb dump button. Included with a shot of matt black paint to disguise it.

Dunsfold. Last year. You know who you are.

The Newark event looks great, I will try and arrange a trip down.
Well unless a ‘surprise’ fathers day event is planned, I had better play it cool.

I have noticed as said that nearly every item on ebay has come from a spitfire and or course is very rare.

Quite often and laughable are the ebay adverts stating that the item is very rare but the seller doesn’t know what it is or where it’s from. Talk about. A contradictory quote!

These items along with these might whet your appetite further! 😉

As an aside Chris do you service weighing equipment as part of the company portfolio? 🙂

… give me a break, I was watching the football! 😀

With the extra influx of sellers since last Friday it looks set to be a great opportunity for some ‘face to face aviation trading!’

Why not make a start at this event this coming weekend? 🙂

It runs alongside Cockpit-Fest!
