Phil and I visited Sywell last Saturday. For those who don’t know, Sywell nr. Northampton is a real gem of a field. Like Shuttleworth, it’s a grass airfield alive with history.
So, took some snaps. Hope you like them. Apologies if ths borders on General Aviation (but no-one reads that board anyway)

Blue Robin
Why is BWOD infamous, have I missed something?
Moggy C,
The colour scheme is almost as it was when brought into the UK,
a previous owner improved on it ! Yes a complete respray would
be good but very expensive. New engine, parachutes, seat belts,
avionics fit have been a higher priority.
Yes from inside the silver wings look good, even if a blur during some manoeuvres!

Nice Thread Blue Robin, whilst not a flier (not for the want of trying) its one of those places I have always fancied a look at. I have friends that have flown from / to there and say what a nice place it is.One of these friends covered photographically the recent en-mass Tiger flight from there and said that the folks were really accommodating.
I’m not adverse to a bit of oldish GA so I could see me having a good day there.
Incidentally, looking at the picture with the Miles in the background I was wondering just how many aircraft from that fine stable still exist in the UK and do they have a gathering at some time. I think Miles manufactured some of the prettiest and most photogenic aircraft of all.

Check out PPrune in the Private aviation forum for an update on Sywell, from the other side of the fence.

I am their web master. That latest news has been sitting there for ages, no one uses it as yet, put its there if they want it!

Are you the same Loz who didn’t leave a very good news update on the NSoF site? 😉
No full ATC? At a fully grass airfield? Wuss. You don’t need (currently) it at Sywell. Anyway, you’ll soon encounter ATC. You have to land at one as part of your PPL.
What’s that I see on your avatar? A spamcan? Why aren’t you learning in a Robin HR200? I mean, look at the visibility I have compared to you. Tsk! :p 😀

arrhhh this is my local!
Hey someone found where I am learning to fly from.
great little airfield, loads of runways so you norm get one into wind. Only prob is we dont have full atc, only information at the mo, which for a student is not the greatest!
Never mind, good placeall the same!

Speaking of Paul Morgan, I was watching a bunch of kids playing with the fountain that makes up part of his memorial.
I thought to myself “is that disrespectful?” and “do they know the man behind the fountain”.
But then “does it matter”, thinks I, “they’re just kids full of youthful innocence, it’s a nice day and really that’s what IT is all about, whatever that elusive IT might be”
Things just felt right with the world in the philosophical sense y’know? Life goes on etc.

Now to do that I understand you have to grab the fire/fueler chap when it’s quiet and ask nicely to see her. I guess Suzy is in one of the hangars adjacent to the Jodel.

Nice pics BR, are there any a/c from the stable of the late Paul Morgan? The Sea Fury & Corsair have gone I know, but the whereabouts of P51 ‘Suzy’ is unknown to me

Naw,
I think it’s just a bad colour scheme, nothing to do with your photographic inadequacies.
I’d much rather be sitting in it looking out, the view will definitely be better (True of any aircraft actually).
Whilst I’d be happy to own that aircraft, I must say a respray would be very high on my priority list.

We only asked…
I wouldn’t jump in a Tiger for anything more than £110/hour.
Bad jpeg thing going on there with the Yak. Probably needed a wash too to make it gleam in the sun. Ask young Ed – he’s flown in it.

Meanwhile, a Tiger in red and black Brooklands colours is giving trial flights. Twenty minutes for £99. We equate that to £300 PER HOUR and politely decline.
See Tiger Airways on another thread. They are at 135 quid for 20 minutes.
You could have saved yourself 36 quid there Neil 😉
Does that Yak 52 look as bad in real life as it does in the picture?

Sounds like the beer alone would make the trip worthwhile.
Thanks for the info BlueRobin
(or should that be ‘WhiteCessna’) 🙂

They’ve recently erected fencing in order to allay any fatal accidents on the general public (there are LOTS of them about). However, the fencing and positioning of it isn’t restrictive to watching. A good viewing point is the raised “hillock” to the right of the patio area by the bar, complete with benches.
Also recommended is the beer. Spitfire, London Pride and Adnams. Put’s the Red Lion to shame really :p

I love Cubs. Here’s the flying school’s L18 Super Cub. 90 horses, no flaps and unlike some school Cub hacks, very tidy inside too.
Note our C172R mount in the background. I know which one I’d rather fly! :p

Also based at Sywell, is the infamous BWOD. A fine Yak-52 if there ever was one (Moggy might disagree!)
By: BlueRobin - 4th August 2003 at 15:50
…finally the engine pops into life and we get to hear that oh-so classic sound 🙂 😎
(note AX microlight departing – nice climb angle)
By: BlueRobin - 4th August 2003 at 15:49
Now of course Tigers require a chap to the swing the prop in order to start the engine (BTW, lady pilot)
“Mags on…thumbs up….contact!”
The chap tried for a few minutes without success before winding the prop back through six turns (flooded engine)…

However, they’re still very busy. Here we see an assembled family before one of their loved ones departs. Nice day for it 🙂
