Many years ago there was the radio series… Then came the book, followed by the TV series, with the towel trailing close behind!
Yes, at last someone has – again – decided that they have what it takes to film The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Some of you will know that this has been on the cards for a dozen years or more, by Universal and Disney (and probably others on the quiet), but today – on the radio – I heard mention of HHGG going into production, with filming starting in London next year! A quick flick through the BBC website lists the British production company Hammer and Tongs as taking up the reins, although this report is dated 18/6/03 so why anyone is getting excited now is beyond me! But I digress…
We all know… Some of us will remember from TV… If you have ever read the book, listened to the radio series (it get repeated fairly frequently) or had a friend repeat the lines at you like an adolescent Python fan then you will/should know the major players.
My question/your mission:-
Who should play Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, Trillian, Marvin, etc.
We will all have seen/heard the recent “Who should play Doctor Who when it returns to TV?” stuff in the papers, TV, etc so I am just wondering if anyone has any good ideas!
Personally I went on to read Terry Pratchett (who I found a lot less bitter, more thought provoking, and, um, funnier than Douglas Adams) – amongst others – but I know that there can never be a live action adaptation of any of his Discworld books without losing so much colour and detail. Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (author of the Sandman series) has apparently been down to be filmed several times (the last time I heard anything it was to be directed by Terry Gilliam, maybe to be filmed after Tideland, his then next project, and possibly with Joseph Fiennes and Christopher Lambert playing the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale respectively although Johnny Depp and Robin Williams have also been mentioned as ‘In talks’… Please god no!) so I’ll believe it when I see it.
Maybe I should post it as a poll, d’you think?

Comet I think you miss the point of Rappens posting Dudley Moore was Arthur, in the film of the same name.
I think it’s called Irony !!!!
Sorta like metaly but a bit more specific y’mean? (Tee hee hee!)

Dudley Moore is extremely dead, as of March last year.
Thought the TV show was awful. Don’t tell my other half, she bought me the video.
Finally bought a boxed set of the books, at last confident there aren’t going to be any more.
I would love to see a film done well, or not at all.

There is only one Arthur. And i’m still waiting for the Vogons to start building that intergalactic bypass.
Aside from Arthur, my choices would be:
Ford Prefect – Jamie Oliver (can’t stand his enthusiasm)
Zaphod Beeblebrox – One head Bill Murray, the other Jarvis Cocker
Trillian – Liz Hurley would be nice.
Marvin – Thom Yorke 😀
Tomorrow’s Thursday… i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Agree that Radio is best… for some subjects – i.e. Dead Ringers for a start!
When I was at school it was the case that no one listened to anything except Radio 1 – anything else was for fogeys! But this TV prog appeared with fantastic computer graphics and strange looking aliens – even the sets didn’t wobble when someone walked past! Ok, we now know that all the computer stuff was just art work and never saw a computer! Agree that the TV series might look dated now but the radio version would/should stand the test of time a lot better!
Unfortunately the film will upset some fans, and might make others – but if they read the books then hopefully they will see what they were missing anyway.
Have just looked at the radio scripts book and – as I said previously – they were different from all the other versions so no matter what they do, this film will be different for some section of the fan base.
Heard the new Carry On film is trying to draft in a big name American star to appeal to that market – hope HHGG doesn’t do the same.

Moggy, more people would have gotten into the series via the TV rather than the radio. I can remember going to school the morning after the first transmission in 1981 and practically the whole school was talking about it! It has been extremely popular when repeated – even, I believe, when on satellite. That said Douglas Adams originally didn’t really want to transfer the concept from radio to TV because he was a radio man. Then everything went quiet because it was all tied up in the first attempts to make a film from the scripts. Even now when the radio shows have been repeated it almost comes as a bit of a shock through the perceived lack of publicity (that is to the man in the street – the die-hard fans will insist they knew all along!), and there are still people out there who didn’t know it started on the radio anyway. Every so often I have a quiet think about buying the complete radio series on CD, though!Flood.
I’m sure you are right about the TV attarcting more people to the genre than the radio. But I’m a wireless type of chap, brought up on the Goons, Navy Lark, Round the Horne. None of which have aged well.
But HHGTTG is timeless. I do have the enitre two series on cassette tape, but listen to it less frequently now since cars all seem to have CD players.

“How can Dudley Moore play Arthur? He’s dead.”
Has he died… last I heard he was alive, but suffering from Parkensons disease or something.
“I totally disagree, Douglas Adams is a much funnier writer.”
You mean WAS a much funnier writer… he is actually currently dead. (I have the HHGTTG DVD).

Have to say that I am interested in the project only from the point of view of seeing how much a basic story line can differ – yet again!
The records differed from the TV program which differed from the books which differed from the radio series. I haven’t seen any computer games but I don’t doubt that it/they would have differed from the others too. The whole concept fascinates in the same way that a serious car accident does…
The thought of Hugh Grant as Arthur horrifies me, but doesn’t surprise me – he is professionally lost and gormless and the Americans apparently worship the ground etc… At least it wouldn’t be Dudley Moore’s corpse lurching around the film set!

I heard that Hugh Grant was up to play Arthur.
PLEASE, GOD, NOOOOOOOOO!

Disagree strongly.
Hitchikers was a triumph as a radio series, it’s original form. Anything else doesn’t seem to work. I thought the TV was awful.

Can see it now – all the little ‘English’ bits turned over to become American bits… Tea would become coffee for a start, towel to face cloth maybe, and “Arthur just don’t do it for me – lets change it to Scott! And Dent, what is Dent? Hey, we’ll change it to Haffenberg maybe. And this Ford Prefect; thats just too kooky, so lets have him as an Afro-American by the name of… “
I think you get the idea.
As for Johnny Depp and Robin Williams in Good Omens… NO WAY!
This will be another one filmed in “Noo Yoik” with all the life beaten out of it so that Americans could understand it!
