Just seen this right now on the news.

Nuclear submarine HMS Astute runs aground off SkyeThe Royal Navy’s newest and largest attack submarine HMS Astute has run aground off Skye, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
Described as the stealthiest ever built in the UK, the £1bn boat was being out through sea trials and was not armed.
A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said: “This is not a nuclear incident.
“We are responding to the incident and…..

You’re not wrong there.

I’d imagine it would be ‘testing the envelope’. Seeing how manoeverable the boat was at very shallow depths in inshore waters. Thats the sort of thing you do with a leadship so you can write the book on the handling for the follow on units.
Either that or whoever was doing the navigation felt like showing off and got it badly wrong!. Pride goeth before a Court Martial!
I know for a fact the RN is very, very short of sub navigators.

There is more than a whiff of Baxter Basics in Viz during the last Tory ensemble
‘In order to maximise patient choice and gain best value for money we have decided to close this hospital. ‘
As a token effort to being on topic. Japanese Navy is moving to 24 boats so maybe we could ask them to do the littoral patrols of UK waters whilst the French provide the French Air Arm for our flat tops?

And how would they keep the skills base to make the SSBN follow-on class if the Astute class was canned?
They want to keep the nukes, so they’ll keep the SSNs.
It was a bit of a joke. 😀
Well anyway, anything can happen, don’t forget that this is the same government that thinks its a good idea to scrap the Harriers very soon but still go ahead with two huge Aircraft Carriers. They must’ve been up all night trying to think that one through.
Just don’t mention to the Tories and their tea boys that its possible to carry nukes on the back of an articulated truck. They’ll think its a good idea and scrap the SSNs.
No brains Tory without a clue: “Whats wrong with an articulated truck? Its cheaper than a sub, it can carry nukes…” Yes but…
…As Jeremy Clarkson once said: “Why go to a club and spend money on a stripper when you can stay at home and get my mother to do it for me for free…Shes a woman!” Yes you could….But its a bit more than wrong isn’t it.
Thats how the Tories think in this country.

Trident, it was on the BBC news Friday evening at 6pm and an ‘old salt’ told me that it was also on Ch4 the same evening. Perhaps its on the iplayer ?
Admittedly you couldn’t see inside it but you could see the interesting design of what I think were the inlet Stators, the overall dimensions and the fact that the insides were painted a very light grey or blue, which I found puzzling given the rest of the boat was black.
Thanks, I think I may have located the footage:
http://news.stv.tv/scotland/highlands-islands/204419-stricken-submarine-towed-free/
You don’t see a whole lot due to the low resolution of the video but there does seem to be a lighter colour inside. While nobody will have obtained any secrets from that footage, it clearly shows that the pump jet was partially exposed and this gentleman with the telephoto lens may well have seen something the RN would rather he had not…
EDIT: He did, it seems.

Very large number of IGVs (thus probably not just structural supports but imparting pre-swirl) which in turn suggests the blading seen from the rear could be the actual rotor, rather than simple struts. What little we can discern of the back end would then allow at least the number of blades to be narrowed down a bit (8 – 11 at a quick guess). Not an intelligence disaster, but pretty embarrassing alright.

Having navigated those waters in a past career I would point out the tides are very strong between Skye and the mainland and this week we have Spring tides which are even stronger!!:diablo::diablo:
Nice one 😎

Did anyone notice in one of the articles on this that they mentioned a crew tansfer from ship to shore was happening at the time of the incident. Perhaps they were practicing inserting the SBS and got a little too close to land.

I noticed The Sun used all of their years of technical knowledge in military matters to put this on the same page as the HMS Astute story
However they did confuse the Russian Akula (NATO Typhoon) for the NATO Akula (russian Shchuka-B) and even put the wrong picture.
Last time i looked there is only 1 Typhoon active and that is on missile trials and the correct Russian sub can’t be found due to the Nimrod retirement and asking the US navy for help??
Still it is the sun so what can you expect maybe the Russian sub will defect?
curlyboy
BRITAIN has had to call in the Americans for a real-life Hunt For Red October because the RAF Nimrod fleet is grounded.
As Prime Minister David Cameron announced he was cancelling new Nimrods on Tuesday, an American P3 was beginning a hunt for a Russian sub in the Atlantic.

Oooopsy daisies.
I can picture the Tories now, thinking; ‘Hmmm? We can use this incident as an excuse to scrap the subs.’
