HMS Euryalus

Hello Everyone,

I am new to the navy forum. My father has found a diary of my Great Grandfather’s. He served aboard the HMS Euryalus in Gallipoli. Can anyone provide me with information/photo’s on this ship? The internet hasn’t been too helpful.

Kind regards,

Todd

I was in Hull recently and drove past a building called HMS Iron Duke, I think it was a cadet centre of some sort. During WW1 Iron Duke was a 25000 ton battleship with ten 13.5 inch guns, now its a run down building in the worst place to live in the UK.

Or a Glow worm, or Temeraire (on a ship, not some training base) 😡

Sadly a great many names will never be re-used and some should never have been re-used regardless; HMS St Albans… forsooth …. No doubt I am heading into shoaling waters here, so I had better shut up. 😀

Sadly with the massive reduction in size of the RN a great many fine names will never be used again.

Wouldn’t mind seeing an HMS Ajax and HMS Achilles again!

Hello everyone,

Thank-you all for the quick responses! Indeed it seems that the RN liked to use names more than once with their vessels. Photo’s of the Euryalus sure are hard to come by… Do any of you know how I can find out what my Great Grandfather did onboard Euryalus?

Kind regards,

Todd

HMS Euryalus

Indeed there was a cruiser in the 2nd WW and a Leander class frigate commissioned in 1964.

Three more pics of the 1st WW ship – HMS Euryalus at Fremantle 1905 available here.

The Euryalus, is one of those names that the RN keep re-using. I bet there have been at least 3 others. There was a Frigate in the 70’s with this name, I believe.

HMS Euryalus at Gallipoli? Hmm, the armoured cruiser HMS Euryalus of the Cressy class was in the Mediterrean 1915-1916. She had a Battle Honour for the Dardanelles 1915.

Euryalus was built in 1899-1904 by Vickers, Barrow. She was used in the First World War in the North Sea and for the protection of Atlantic convoys in 1914. Then she was at the Dardanelles. Afterwards she was employed in the East Indies as Flagship. A concersion to a Minelayer in Hong Kong was abandoned in 1918 and she was sold in 1920. Euryalus was broken up in Germany.

Euryalus was 143,9 m long, 21,2 m wide and had a displacement of 12 000 ts. She had two 23,4 cm, twelve 15,2 cm, twelve 7,62 cm and three 4,7 cm guns and two 45,7 cm torpedo tubes.
