HMS Gloucester and Greek Meko F454 Psara docking in Beirut to pick up citizens on BBC news 24.
The Israelis have only allowed her to dock for short time (don’t know what would happen if they took a pot shot).
HMS Gloucester has her air search radar going whilst docked.
We really need to get HMS Bulwark up if we want to get a decent amount of people out a Type 42 doesn’t have the capacity to take much.

Norway, having a huge merchant fleet, requisitioned a large ro-ro vessel in the area to transport people to Cyprus. It also brought with it many other Western citizens.

My favorite Royal Marines specialism: chef! Special forces cooking … works for the imagination :p
As for RN ships in Lebanese ports, saw that on the news too: when and why do RN Type 42’s sometime not have the protective domes of the fire control radars for Sea Dart installed?
The type 909 only has its protective radome removed for post maintenance callibration tests that the Gloucester hasn’t got them is interesting – maybe the RN have decided thay aren’t needed anymore. I don’t think it would affect the performance much having it on or off.

I wondered that too  does it improve performance?
It’s a shame no one has any decent sized amphibious aircraft or Ekranoplans for these situations, they would get the job done a lot quicker.

Its pleasing to see that the RN managed to get so many assets there so soon. One vessel not to underestimate is the RFA Fort Victoria. I had no idea the RFA ‘Forts’ were so large until I stood beside one last year. They are nearly as big as the UK carriers and could probably carrier a significant number of refugees. Related to this, I am sure it was no small achievement to get the UK based Chinooks to Cyprus over the weekend as well.
Something like this may hopefully encourage the UK government think again before reducing the fleet further. Imagine the fuss had the nearest ship had been sitting tied up in reserve (like Invincible) in Pompey harbour and 12000 people needing to be moved 🙁
I have not heard about the American naval response, presumably they have significant ships committed ?
You know what Super Nimrod I have expeianced exactly the same thing. Last year when I went to the festival of the Sea at Portsmouth one of the Fort class was there and it was huge!
It is clear to me the RN has a plan along with the RAF and it seems to be working out. It makes me proud that we have a first class navy and airforce who can despite defence cuts step up to the line and defend our interests.

The British ambassador to Lebanon and the Captain to the Gloucester are now being interviewed.
This was apparently a dry run and they intend to get going with more tomorrow, initially with warships and then with commercial ships with the operation completing in a week.
