HMS Mermaid's engines?

HMS Mermaid was a Yarrow design that was originally built for Ghana. After a period of service in the Royal Navy she was sold to the Royal Malaysian Navy. Still in service as a training ship – she deployed on anti-piracy duties to the Gulf of Aden in 2009 – she underwent a refit in 1997 and had Wartsila diesels fitted. She has a CODAD arrrangement but does anyone know what diesels [Olympus maybe?] she was originally fitted with when she was commissioned into the RN? Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback, insn’t 8 Crossley ASR1 diesels a bit of an overkill for a vessel this size?

HMS Mermaid was indeed based on the Type 41/Type 61 [Leopard/Salisbury] hull but externally, does she actually share any similarities? Looking at the photo on the left below and comparing it with the HMS Mermaid photo above, the hulls look very different.

In the pic on the right below is a frigate that Yarrow customed designed for the Royal Malaysian Navy in the 1970’s, does she bear a resemblance to any Royal Navy frigate design from that period?

Also [apologies for the numerous] questions :] : which was the first navy to introduce a vessel with a CODAG arrangement?

From memory they should have been Admiralty Standard diesels. The Leopard/Salisbury propulsion fit incorporated eight units of the ASR1 type and Mermaid was very closely related.

The 1973-74 Jane’s Fighting Ships entry says “similarity in hull and machinery with “Leopard” class.”

This agrees with Jonesy’s memory.

Elsewhere I found this:

Machinery: Diesel-reduction: 8 VVS ASR1 diesels, 2 English Electric reduction gearboxes, 2 shafts w/CP props
