Honeymoon trip what's the chance of an upgrade

Folks what do you think the chances are of getting a free upgrade for my honeymoon next month. Fly from Heathrow to San Francisco and will return after some touring from New York to Heathrow. Will be flying with united on a T7, whatโ€™s to best way to go about this i.e. take my wedding certificate to show them at check in or something. Any help/info will be appreciated.

A friend of mine got married 4 years ago in July and he went to the Caribbean for his honeymoon, flying with Virgin (pardon the pun!) – as he was on his honeymoon and a note had been made in his booking by the tour operator, Virgin OFFERED them an upgrade to Upper Class without them having to ask. Also, about 6 years ago a friend at work won Virgin tickets to Florida in the Gill Airways Christmas raffle and her and her husband were upgraded on one of their sectors to Upper Class just be cause they were prizewinners. The moral of the story – fly Virgin!

I’d certainly ask at check in if there is any chance of an upgrade for you honeymooners. July and August are more holiday season and therefore business travel dips slightly, possibly freeing up some business class (or first class) seats for you.

My experiences with Continental have been that of Skymonster. When the aircraft is
overbooked it is the frequent flyer passengers who obtain the upgrades and I have
been fortunate to get upgrades on the Newark/Glasgow flights on a couple of
occassions. I have heard some passengers asking about the possibility of upgrades and being told that as the plane is not full there is no chance. But by all means give it a go ‘cos you won’t get if you don’t ask.

My experience these last few weeks with UA LHR-SFO-LHR more than once is that they usually go full or very close to… They upgrade their own top level frequent flyers first. Again, from experience, there are usually more people looking for an upgrade than actually get one – the J class cabin has gone full on each flight I’ve been on.

Don’t marry her, then you’ll be able to afford to go on your own business class

Steve,

Not to sure she will be happy if I mention that at this late stage, guess I better take her with me.

I’d mention the honeymoon at check in and see what happens ? At worst they might throw in some champers ? :p Good luck.

BTW , you can be offered this kind of deal either at the the check-in window or right before board in. I have seen both situations with UA

What’s happen quite often with UA in Summer season is … overbooking.
This occurs all along the year but even more in July and August.
My advice (since it happened to me 2 years ago in SFO) :
Be there early , and be preapre to accept an offer right away.
They usely offer accomodation and a seat in Business on the next flight.

BTW , happy honeymoon ๐Ÿ™‚

Many thanks fo rthe info Hand87_5, will bear this in mind thank you

Thanks for your helpfull view there,

If I was made of money I would of paid for an upgrade but due to the cost of the wedding and this 14 day touring the USA I cannot afford this. But I have been told that for special occasions Airlines do this?.

Getting married is no commercial reason for offering a free upgrade. If something more than Economy is what you want, pay for it like everyone else – it is meant to be the only time you’ll be going on honeymoon after all.
