Honouring David Maltby and 617 Squadron

Today the annual memorial service was held for 617 Squadron veterans at Wickhambreaux Church, about 5 miles east of Canterbury. Squadron Leader David Maltby, of Dambusters fame, is buried there – the only crew member whose body was recovered after his Lancaster hit the sea during the first abortive Dortmund-Ems Canal raid.

His nephew had asked on the Flyer forum whether anyone could do a flypast for the veterans, and a couple of us flew there this morning in a Bulldog and Yak 52. The rather claggy conditions made it a challenge to find, but a number of small lakes in the area helped us get a pinpoint.

The feedback is that the veterans enjoyed the show. It was an honour to be able to salute these brave gentlemen.

My camera ended up being carried in the back of the Yak… There are also a few shots of the preparations for Shoreham by Mr T’s crew.
