Hi All,
Well that is an excellent end to the story in that case and the building of the sand dam along with the thousands of people will benefit immensely from the family’s generosity……:eagerness:

Lets hope it is the IWM who made the offer, who already had his logbook. If the medals and logbook had been kept together in the first place they would have easily made £40,000 plus, thereby making a good amount for donation to the Dam project in Africa.

The medal evidently did not sell at auction.

Though it failed to sell in the saleroom auction, it was bought immediately for £30,600 after the sale by a UK Solicitor who is said to be ‘a trustee of two RAF Museums’. It has not been made clear to me which museum(s).

It was further reported that when ‘appropriate space becomes available, the medal will be loaned to these for public exhibition’. The medal will remain in the UK.

I assume there wasn’t a reserve on them near the minimum .I hope the new owner looks after them.

I was surprised to see they went under estimate, thought they would do more!

When I was a youngster, my dad gave me his father’s WWI service medals to play with. I’ve no idea what happened to them,
I expect they were lost. Nobody worried though.

And I think, too, that in many cases both the owner of the medals and his/her family feel less proprietorial than some outsiders do on their behalf. They are theirs, after all.

Talking to an army vet some years ago who rarely discussed his “war” it transpired he was honourably decorated and wasn’t sure but thought the medals might be “up in the loft”. There was no encouragement to help me find them.

We must remember that the family are selling the medals to help save lives, therefore very noble of them to forefit their ancestors medals to help others now and in the future.

It’s all very well saying the family should keep them, but does it really matter where they end up ?
Maybe they will go on display somewhere, where people can actually see them ?

I think raising money to build a dam from the man who tried to knock one down is a very elegant and amusing proposal.

I’m sure he would have laughed.

Hi All,
I don’t know about anybody else but what a sad state of affairs and a sign of the type of world we live in when those who have earned the medals and family’s of those who earned the medals are faced with stark and agonising choices like selling the medals or not. I really do hope that some philanthropist comes through and lets the public view them if they have to be sold……:apologetic:
