What are your five horrible aircraft deals in the past 30 years?
in no particular order
1. Austria and Typhoon: Required a basic fighter for air policing and chose an expensive high end one with higher operational costs and downgraded it to fit their requirements. Already requires replacement.
What they should’ve gotten: Gripen
2. India and MMRCA: drawn out decade long competition, only to be cancelled for a gov’t to gov’t deal which is still ongoing. sucks for all participants.
What they should’ve gotten: Bought the M2K line earlier and produce M2k in house
3. Japan and F-2: single engined bigger F-16 but much more expensive. The only thing good about it is Japan was the first to get a fighter sized AESA radar in service.
What they should’ve gotten: another F-15 variant, license built by Mitsubishi
4. India and Pak-Fa: Russians not happy with dealing with the Indians, Indians not happy with Pak-fa. just break it off and go their own way
5. Thailand and Harriers: Why!?
