Paul, Dan Gryder states that he belives that any pilot that question never get a seat, so do as you are told, his opinion. I think we will see something big out of this.

Audio leading up to, and after the accident has been released.

Blancolirio has uploaded a video analysing it : –

Wings Over Dallas Midair Collision Airboss Audio RELEASED! – YouTube

Very interesting to hear, and begs the question why no one involved queried the actions of the Air Boss.

This dreadful event continues to generate a major public profile, but the ‘why did this happen?’ process is well underway.

Dan Gryder and his ‘tell it how he sees it’ accident analysis channel is not universally applauded, but he has gathered a great many followers, and he continues to present some pretty compelling opinions on numerous accidents.

There is a public perception that the P-63 pilot was the figure mainly responsible for the Dallas tragedy, but D.G moves to defend him, and actually puts the (unqualified) Air Boss in the spotlight.

A terrible accident. My condolences to the family and friends of everyone who lost their life in this tragedy.

Thank you for the link to the video which provides a very plausible, easily understood explanation of the likely reasons this happened.

It was so avoidable , never should have happened but we have had the same over here ,absolutely heartbreaking  . A very good factual video explaining what actually happened ,not gory just the facts   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C342dfNPCyg

You’re not the only one, Adrian. So horrible and so hard to understand.

Here’s the NTSB briefing I mentioned:

What the hell can you say? It’s been a bad few years for B17s and crews – Liberty Belle, then the Collings Foundation’s B17, and now this. I struggle to imagine with all their experience the CAF putting the aircraft in a situation where this could happen, but it has. Been thinking about this for a day and a half and still can’t put my thoughts down clearly.

Very tragic. Looks like the P-63 pilot got the positioning wrong, as he should have been on the same line as the P-51s doing flybys which were well to the left of the B-17.

Sadly, some comments and posters on YouTube and social media are claiming it was a deliberate act on the part of the P-63 pilot.

At that speed and bank angle, he had no hope of seeing the Fortress.

Cheers

Paul

Looks like the B-17 is Texas Raiders, from the CAFs Galveston, Texas, wing, judging from the paint job. Video shows the P-63 plowing right into its rear fuselage and cutting off  the tail.
