Well… if it wasn’t talked about last week, the ADD-afflicted US media think it was never talked about at all.

Sometimes I think my country is really going down the tubes, and other times I know it already has.

I saw pictures & info about the Horton IX (and its move to the US for evaluation) from a number of books when I was in my mid-teens… 30+ years ago!

Wings for the Horton at NASM

Chaps,

I’m pretty sure thats not the case as there were a pair of wings sitting behind her when I was there, and they looked very Horton-like to me.

Hmm, really need to dig out these piccies

Will have a look later on and post them if I can find them

The last pics I saw of the Ho IX show it to be in need of a fair bit of TLC before it’s up to display standard, apart from the wings. I believe some of the decking was ply and it’s in a poor state. Still it’s in good hands and will no doubt emerge in pristine condition at some point. Now, should the NASM fabricate new outer wing panels and display it complete? I think it would look very impressive that way, plus there would be no damage to original structure.

I believe the NASM’s Horten IX is missing it’s outer wings, which is probably one reason why it’s not been placed on public display sooner.

Horton Ho.IX

dhfan,

You are indeed correct the Ho.IX is still out at the Garber Facility, Silver Hill, Maryland.

I should imagine that she is awaiting her turn in the restoration queue before being displayed in the new building out at Dulles airport.

I have some piccies of her somewhere from my visit in 2002, I’ll see if I can dig them out and post a couple

A largely complete Horten, don’t know which one, was found at the end of the war and shipped to the States.
I’ve got a feeling I’ve seen postwar pictures of it so presumably it’s still there somewhere. Silver Hill?

Back in October at the Duxford forum meet, we visited the documents section. I idly leafed through a post-war report on Horten flying wings, and it mentioned a multi engine beast (definitely not the HoIX/Go229, this had 6 or 8 engines), and described it as essentially complete and not far away from being flight ready. This took me by surprise as I had not heard of it before. It sounds like the America Bomber of the programme, but suggests it survived and was in an advanced state of completion. Wonder what happened to it?

Was suprisingly good actually, nice footage of the development of the three contenders for the “America Bomber” as it was termed.
