Hot news from The Shoreham Aircraft Museum

Firstly, the museum will be opening for the 2006 season on Easter Sunday 16th April.

Secondly, we will be holding a further two signing events at the museum this year. The first will be on Sunday May 21st, and I will post details of those veterans due to be attending when I get them.

Details should also be appearing on our website at http://www.shoreham-aircraft-museum.co.uk/

The money raised at these signings will go towards our aim this year of erecting memorials to those RAF Battle of Britain pilots who lost their lives close to the museum.

A couple of changes to the line-up for the signing on Sunday 21st May.

Firstly, Peter Ayerst will not be there, as he has switched to the second signing on Sunday 23rd July.

Secondly, a former WW2 Luftwaffe pilot, Feldwebel Heinz Radlauer, has decided to attend the signing on the 21st May on his own initiative, and at his own expense. Now I call that a very nice gesture from one pilot to the others that we will remembering with these memorials.

Heinz learnt to fly gliders in 1940, aged 17, and joined the Luftwaffe in August 1941. After Fighter School, in June 1944 he was posted to join JG51 Molders then fighting on the Eastern Front near Minsk, scoring his first victory in October of that year. Heinz flew the Bf109G, the Fw190A, and at the end of the war the Fw190D, by which time he had notched up over 100 combat missions. Credited with 15 air victories, all on the Eastern Front, he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class.

At the time of posting all the other pilots are still attending. Any further changes will be posted here.

I can now reveal that the current line-up for our first signing on Sunday 21st May is – Bob Doe, Pete Brothers, Geoffrey Wellum, Jimmy Corbin, Nigel Rose, and Tony Iveson.

Any changes to this & further details will be posted here.

Our second signing has been fixed for Sunday 23rd July. The line-up for this will be revealed nearer the time.

The first memorial that we are working on will be for James Paterson, a New Zealander of No 92 Sqn who lost his life on the 27th September 1940. The memorial will be unveiled at a memorial service at the spot where he crashed on the anniversary of his death.

We would like to have a flypast at the service, so if anyone has ‘access’ to a Spitfire, Hurricane, or something else suitable, and can arrange for it to be in the Farningham area on the morning of the 27th September 2006, please let me know.

Cheers

Geoff.
