Well I spotted the tax camera van late and could only get the speed down to 83mph.
But that is enough to qualify for a ‘speed awareness course’
Now with the nature of my work I drive a lot fewer miles than I used to and my licence is clean.
What would you do? Suck up the points or take the course?
Bear in mind I’d have to travel to the course, and if it is in Ipswich that’s something like £15-20 on top of the fine to attend.
Thoughts?

Try speeding in Latvia..90 Euro on the spot for 52 KPH in a 50 KPh limit using a MPH speedo.
Of course my Renault Scenic had KPH marked in red on the black.

Talking about HGVs, what about the new revised speed limit for HGVs on single carriageways,I drive approx 40,000 plus miles a year and they are still dawdling along at 40 miles an hour (mainly supermarket wagons) with a long procession behind them with the inevitable frustration this causes.
By the way Moggy down in Somerset they were holding the speed awareness days at the Yeovilton museum.
I understand where you are coming from being patronised etc but the people I know that have taken the Course say it did help especially when they could look round the museum afterwards obviously they paid the entrance fee.Cap10
When did these new limits come into force? I have always thought that over 7.5 tonnes the limit on single carriageways was 40.

Even a few of us professional drivers who clock up 65-70,000 miles a year, still fall foul of mobile speed cameras. I am waiting to see if I fell foul of one last week when cresting a hill in a 30 mph limit at 33mph , as I looked downhill there the van was with camera pointed up the hill towards me. They seem to have dropped the % overspeed for heavy goods vehicles, where you had a little leeway, a mate of mine recently got done for 32 in a 30 limit resulting in a £60 fine and three points.

So do I? A truth inculcated into me by my father many many years ago. But not many do the maths these days!

Agree with you there, 98, the trip tells the story. Question that I’ve had for some time…I’ve assumed that the speed trigger for a penalty notice depends perhaps on the method and availability of enforcement, speed limit, geographical area, government edicts etc. is there an actual standard speed trigger?
Everyone doing 80 on the motorway, pop up community enforcement vans doing all speeders in villages, GATSOS on the M6 which may or my not work, it all seems to be so pot luck.

What drivers need to consider is that the difference in 40 over 50 or 60 mph in terms of time saved is inconsequential.
How many times have you been passed but fast vehicles on a dual carriage way only to catch them up several miles ahead on a slip or set of lights.
While it may seem like speed makes a difference, because the start and end of our journeys is very much a crawl (or stationary) it makes very little difference.
The trip on my car shows an average speed of 27 mph. I do 250 mile per week at speeds between 50 and 70mph.
Do the math.

Looks like I jumped the the gun a bit regarding the revised speed limits for HGVs, the revised limit will come into effect January 2015, this probably accounts for the lorries still “dawdling” along at 40mph on single carriageways. The limit will be increased to 50mph which should help the flow of traffic.
My licence lapsed due to moving jobs and not renewing my medical.
Any rate off to eat humble pie, sorry turkey and book myself on the driver awareness course.

Did you take any photos you would like to share Moggs. I’m sure a lot of us would like to see some
Lots, but you will have to wait for the next (February?) edition of Britain At War Magazine. Another fabulous read from Key Publishing.

Whilst we’re on the subject of driving this may get me accused of thread drift as it isn’t related to the op’s point. Are new drivers these days not taught to use the handbrake? Next time you are waiting behind other traffic a traffic lights/round about etc take a look at how many vehicles are being held on the foot brake. .
Mostly the result of modern technology in cars. A lot of cars now have “stop start” built into them. So when you stop and
put your foot on the brake, the engine automatically stops until you take your foot off.
I have this on my Honda, although I do try to avoid using it in heavy traffic, as I know how annoying it can be.
The problem with trucks driving along side by side for miles, is because they usually have their cruise control set, and
don’t want to take it off.

To be honest there was really no way to get out of it until we reached the roundabout on the outskirts of Dover from which point we had already invested two and a half hours and could even see the boat in the docks.
In the end it was worth it. Seeing the 1914 Christmas Truce commemoration at Ploegsteert justified the effort.

Talking of overtake margins it appears that trucks on the A34 are determined to set up rolling road blocks. It’s not unusual to travel up to five miles behind a pair of them and the one in the outside lane has an overtake margin of about 1mph.
The Germans have a phrase for this problem – “Elefantrennen” or “Elephant Race”

A constant problem on the A14. Even the section near Kettering, that has a 6am to 8pm restriction on anything over 7.5 tons using lane 2, seems to have drivers of HGV sat holding back traffic…

I imagine the irritation of the brakelighting paled into insignificance behind the three hour journey into the terminal plus what you had already driven!! I admire your singleness of purpose!;)

The handbrake thing is exceptionally annoying. At some unearthly hour on Saturday morning we spent nearly three hours travelling the last five miles into Dover Car Ferry port.
I found myself, in the brief periods when the traffic was moving, manoeuvring to get away from being stuck behind a driver with very powerful LED brake lights and high level repeater and interpose some other poor unfortunate between us.
