How big is your lens?

Just orderd my lens and convertor which will give me a full mag of 600mm. What do most of unes use and how close can I expect to get with a 600mm from a passing plane at full height?

At risk of incurring the wrath of the thread creep police.
What are the largest lens constructed for conventional cameras I.E not for use in U2 or Canberra PR9 or satellites.
I’ve heard that Nikon made a 3000mm prototype available to the army in Northern Ireland for trials and that Carl Zeiss made a 5000mm mirror for the East German border guards.
I’ve got an old Soligor 800mm f8 on pentax screw thread and an MTO 1000mm mirror with an adaptor to fit my Canon A-1.
Be lucky

The longest I use is the 500 with 2x. Making it a 1000 mm on FF, 1300 on 1.3 and 1600 on 1.6 , but most of the time the 500 alone on a 1.6 crop camera is enough. BW Roger

The af “works” with the 2x and x1.4 but it hunts a lot but its still very useable. hunts a bit with the 2x but is perfect with the x1.4.

Tried taking a pics of the moon on the 30D with the 300+x2+x1.4 but it was too much zoom lol!

For aviation though the fixed takes some getting used too after using the 100-400 and 70-200, number of times I’ve been pulling and pushing something that doesn’t move!! or twisting the fcous ring thinking its the zoom!

In theory yes, but you may well require a bucket of instant sunshine to provide sufficient light to use that ensemble. I wouldn’t be too hopefull of retaining any autofocus feature either.

I wouldn’t be too hopeful of getting a sharp image using anything other than ISO3200, either! 😀

With a Canon 300mm L 2.8 IS you have Auto Focus and Image Stabilizer even when you attach converters. Not sure if the same rule applies when you stick another 2x or 1.4x into the equation though.

Most people would assume the image quality is rapidly reduced when you stick on converters. With the Canon 300mm though, you hardly notice any loss of image quality. Managed to have a go on one with my 30D + 2x TC and the results were awesome. Need a loan from the bank before buying one though. 🙂

I stand to be corrected if someone knows otherwise.

I too have the Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L zoom, but my ‘monster’ lens is a Sigma 80-400 f/4-5.6 APO DG OS (stabilised) zoom that is heavy enough to remove any need for a gym membership and replace it with the need for a good chiropractor.

yes thats what it is Paul, I’m compensating for not renewing my gym membership, so this is my weightlighting!

That is the 300mm F2.8 IS L with the x1.4 and 2x attached.

The lens on the floor next to it is the 70-200 IS F2.8 L which is another superb lens. The 100-400 is collecting dust at the moment!

Compensating for something are we, Ian? 😀

I have the Canon EF 70-200L which I use most of the time due to its mindblowing quality, and also the Sigma 50-500DG.

Using a Sigma 100-300f4 on a Canon 400D (1.6x crop factor with the sensor = 160-480)

-I see very little point in going over that as hand holding becomes a real issue unless you’re using a very high shutter speed, in which case all you will achieve is to freeze the propeller of an aeroplane?

Depends on what you mean by “full height”.

I have a Bigma 50-500mm which converts up to 1000mm on 35mm on the 4/3 system, well my understanding anyway and if I am completely honest I have enormous difficulty tracking aircraft at anything above 400mm.More practice needed
